00:09 longtime friend, also an Academy Award winner,

00:12 and also a mensch, Jamie Lee Kurtz.

00:16 [APPLAUSE]

00:24 Hi, everybody.

00:25 These things.

00:26 Good morning, good morning.

00:29 Good morning.

00:29 So obviously, there is much about Jody Foster

00:33 that you already know and you've just heard.

00:35 I'm sorry.

00:41 You've heard about her abundant Academy Award winning talent,

00:45 her fierce dedication to her work,

00:48 both as an actor, producer, and director for the past 59 years.

00:52 Is that correct?

00:54 Is that the math?

00:54 Wow.

00:58 She's a creative force and is committed to the work

01:00 she loves, with great performances

01:02 from that very young age of three to this last year at 60,

01:07 as Bonnie Stoll in NIAID, and her brilliant work

01:10 as Liz Danvers in Night Country, True Detective.

01:13 She is also a loving wife and a dedicated mother

01:18 to her two grown sons, has a great respect for education,

01:23 and yes, she graduated from Yale.

01:27 [APPLAUSE]

01:30 Whatever.

01:31 [LAUGHTER]

01:34 She has many well-earned shiny things,

01:37 recognizing her beautiful work as an artist and as a human.

01:42 Jody has intelligence, passion, and an internal and external

01:47 stride and sense of purpose that makes everyone around her

01:52 feel better about themselves and about what

01:54 they're doing together.

01:56 But these are mere glimpses of Jody, impressions,

02:00 if you will, made like hands and feet,

02:03 pressed into the ground, forever reminding us of the person

02:07 we feel we know.

02:09 But since this wonderful moment is

02:11 about a recognition of her life in films and television

02:15 that we all know about, I thought

02:18 I'd take my time here to tell you people what you don't know.

02:27 [APPLAUSE]

02:31 You don't know that she is a maniac about sports

02:37 and politics.

02:39 She spends a lot of time reading the news and doing spelling bee

02:45 and that she loves parades.

02:47 In fact, when her wife, the artist, activist,

02:52 and filmmaker Alex Hedison graduated

02:56 with her advanced degree to celebrate Alex's graduation,

03:01 Jody hired a marching band who showed up outside their home.

03:07 And Jody and all of their friends in attendance,

03:10 me included, marched up and down the street with them.

03:14 Jody with a baton and a stunned Alex leading the way.

03:20 Jody Foster also loves, loves holidays

03:28 and is known to host a Christmas pageant in costume as Mary,

03:37 where she takes the part seriously by wearing a wig

03:41 and stuffing a pillow in her shirt

03:43 and going door to door in their neighborhood with kids in tow

03:47 as the Wise Men and Shepherds.

03:50 She loves caroling.

03:52 She takes family pictures wearing matching green and red

03:55 striped pajamas.

03:58 She's also a Green Bay Packers fan.

04:00 And yes, Jody Foster wears foam cheese heads

04:05 every football season.

04:06 And she gets very involved in sports brackets

04:08 and will hold lengthy discussions

04:10 with other sports fanatics about her team and their team

04:14 and all of their players.

04:15 Before elections, Jody Foster sends a list

04:23 of all of her recommendations to all of her friends.

04:26 And they then in turn send it to their friends.

04:29 Because during an election cycle,

04:32 Jody Foster has taken the time and actually

04:35 has read about all of the candidates

04:37 and all of their pros and cons of each proposition,

04:41 as she recognizes that many of us

04:43 don't have the time or patience to do that deep dive,

04:47 to understand what it is or who it is we are voting for,

04:50 and how important it is to be informed.

04:54 And she shares her thoughts and hopes for us as a country

04:57 and as a group of people.

04:59 She is telling you, I will get the call.

05:05 Did you get Jody's list?

05:07 And then I pass it on.

05:10 She is also soft and funny and romantic and beautiful.

05:18 And I could and would go on and on and on.

05:23 But the cement is ready.

05:25 And so as we are all gathered here

05:28 to bear witness as she joins a very small group of artists

05:33 with her hands and feet and name permanently concretized

05:38 in cinema history, I want to remind us all

05:41 that once in a while, just once in a while,

05:45 the stars really do align in a magical way.

05:49 And so on this day, Friday, the 19th of April,

05:57 this freaky Friday, if you will, there

06:03 is an amazing connect the dot between Jody and me,

06:09 both born and raised in the same city, in the same industry,

06:14 both who starred in versions of the same movie 27 years apart,

06:22 but who met outside of show-off business

06:25 and who became part of a group of best friends

06:29 who suit up and show up for each other

06:32 in a very powerful and beautiful way.

06:35 And that today, Friday, April 14, 2024--

06:43 19th, sorry.

06:44 Who said-- what did I say?

06:47 14th.

06:48 You made me nervous.

06:51 But that today, April 19, 2024, is also the actual 10th

06:58 anniversary of her marriage to Alex.

07:02 [APPLAUSE]

07:06 And that lets us all know that the stars have indeed aligned.

07:13 The circle of creativity and community and friendship

07:18 is complete.

07:19 And so there is nothing else for me to say

07:22 except that it makes me incredibly

07:25 happy to introduce you to my friend Jody Foster.
