Following the launch of the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX in 2021, Volkswagen doubled down on its high-performance EV lineup last week. The ID.3 GTX and ID.7 GTX Tourer are now closely followed by the sporty electric van of the VW Commercial Vehicles division.
The minibus going to Europe for families who are always in a hurry comes with a four-wheel drive system as standard, thanks to its dual electric motors. Customers can choose between the standard wheelbase version combined with a 79 kWh battery and the longer wheelbase model, which benefits from a higher usable energy content of 86 kWh.
The engine pair is good for a total system output of 335 horsepower, allowing for both flavors to hit 62 mph in just six and a half seconds. Clearly, VW ID. The Buzz GTX will reach an electronically managed top speed of 99 mph.
You'll be able to tow up to 3,968 pounds with the Buzz GTX, whereas the extended derivative with the larger battery can only haul 3,527 pounds. VW doesn't specify combined torque, but notes that the rear-mounted engine is rated at 413 lb-ft, while the front engine produces 99 lb-ft.
Maximum charging power will depend on the battery, as the smaller pack supports 185 kW while the upgraded pack can handle 200 kW. The basic battery takes about 25 minutes to charge from 10 percent to 80 percent, while the larger one takes less than 30 minutes to charge.
High performance ID like other GTX models. The Buzz comes with various styling changes with redesigned bumpers, honeycomb grille and striking Cherry Red paint. There are also special standard 19-inch wheels available with two new sets of 21-inch alloys optional. Boomerang-shaped lower headlights, dark details, black headliner and sporty seats make it even more distinctive.
Elsewhere, the family hauler gets a slightly larger touchscreen (12.9 inches instead of 12 inches), a new optional head-up display and illuminated touchscreen sliders for air conditioning and audio volume. When you opt for the long-wheelbase model, VW sells its largest-ever panoramic sunroof, which goes from opaque to transparent at the touch of a button, at an extra cost.
Identity. Buzz GTX goes on sale in Europe this summer.

The equivalent US model will feature a dual-motor, all-wheel drive setup. The US-bound model will be imported from Hanover, Germany, so it's unlikely to qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit.
