Rwanda Bill: MPs vote to throw out Lords’ amendments
  • last month
MPs have voted once again on the Prime Minister's controversial Rwanda deportation bill. If passed, the bill will confirm Rwanda as a safe third country for the removal of people entering the UK under new immigration laws.

So far, the House of Lords has delayed its passage by suggesting ten amendments. Now, these amendments have been thrown out in Commons, as MPs voted down all ten. Next steps will see the bill returning to the Lords, where peers will decide on whether to reinsert their amendments, slowing down the bill's passage once again.

Speaking before the votes on Monday, Sunak said: "I am still committed to the timeline that I set out previously, which is we aim to get a flight off in the spring."

It comes as a new report calls on the government to allow better refugee integration that works for refugees and British society as a whole. The Commission on the Integration for Refugees brought together people from the entire political spectrum to agree on ways to improve the asylum system, and found a way it could be utilised to produce an overall net economic benefit of one point two billion pounds to the wider UK economy in just five years time.
