The Adventures of François Villon #1: The Oubliette (1914) | The Romaunt of the Rose | Colorized Version
Francois Villon, a wanderer, poet, and philosopher, embarks on a journey to Paris with his companion Colin. Along the way, Villon witnesses the eviction of an elderly couple and, moved by compassion, empties their purses to help them. Despite their own hardships, they continue their journey. Stricken by hunger, they resort to "lifting" the purses of two plump monks, resulting in their arrest and imprisonment.
In prison, Villon and Colin manage to overpower the turnkey. With Colin's insistence, Villon takes on the turnkey's attire to facilitate their escape. Tragically, Colin is tried, convicted, and executed. At the gallows, Villon bids farewell to his friend but is interrupted by the entrance of the Chevalier de Soissons. A confrontation ensues, leading to Villon slaying the knight with a stone.
Seizing the opportunity, Villon appropriates de Soissons' wealth and attire, disguising himself. He encounters Philippa de Annonnay, held captive at an inn. Hungry, Villon decides to satisfy his appetite at the same inn, where he meets de Pogne, Philippa's guardian. A heated discussion escalates into a fierce sword fight. Philippa intervenes by stabbing de Pogne, allowing Villon to escort her safely to her castle before continuing to Paris.
Having squandered the gains from the de Soissons incident, Villon retreats to a garret, dedicating his time to artistic pursuits. King Louis XI, known as the "Prowler," tests Villon's loyalty by orchestrating his arrest. The king proposes Villon's freedom in exchange for aiding in a plot against the monarchy. Indignant, Villon refuses, only for Louis to reveal his true identity and gift Villon a bound copy of his manuscript—the first book printed in France. Louis then bestows knighthood upon Villon, naming him Chevalier des Loges.
