Sarawak Report editor jailed two years for defaming Terengganu Sultanah

Clare Rewcastle-Brown, the founder and editor of Sarawak Report, was sentenced to two years in prison by the Kuala Terengganu Magistrate's Court on Wednesday (Feb 7) after she was g found guilty of defamation against the Sultanah of Terengganu, Sultanah Nur Zahirah.  She was charged with criminal defamation over claims in her book "The Sarawak Report – The Inside Story of the 1MDB Expose" which contained accusations against the Sultanah of Terengganu. 00:17 Magistrate Nik Mohamad Tarmizi Nik Mohamad Shukri ordered the prison sentence against 64-year-old Riou Castle-Brown to start from the date of her conviction from Wednesday.

00:28 The court ruled that after reviewing and evaluating the evidence, including the prosecution witness testimony and exhibits,

00:36 and considering the arguments presented by the prosecution, that a prima facie case had been successfully proven by the prosecution team.

00:45 The court also ruled that as the trial was conducted in absentia, the court hereby finds Riou Castle-Brown guilty and convicted as charged under Section 500 of the Penal Code

00:56 and that a warrant of imprisonment will be issued for submission by the prosecution.

01:02 According to the charges, Riou Castle-Brown wrote a book titled The Sarawak Report, the inside story of one MDB exposed, which contains accusations against the Sultana of Trengganu.
