This quirky action comedy pays homage to Raymond Chandler by giving a thesp-turned-crook a shot at a career in both crime scene investigation and filmmaking. Actor Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.), who is having trouble in New York, runs away to Los Angeles. In the midst of a spectacular Hollywood celebration, Lockhart finds herself in the opulent home of the eponymous homosexual private investigator, Gay Perry (Val Kilmer), with the hope of landing a role in a Hollywood film that will change her life. Harry re-connects with Harmony (Michelle Monaghan), the girl he adored in his small-town high school in Indiana, and she seems to be becoming fonder of him now than she did years before.
