In a blog post on Jan. 23, eBay CEO Jamie Iannone announced that the online retailer would be cutting about 9% of its workforce, NPR reports. .
Iannone said that eBay's staff and expenses "have outpaced the growth of our business.".
eBay is also terminating relationships with several outside contractors, NPR reports. .
Both decisions are intended to help the company remain "nimble" as it faces a "challenging" economy. .
Those who are laid off will
be notified in a Zoom meeting.
Iannone asked U.S. employees to work from home on Jan. 24 to "provide some space and privacy for these conversations.".
eBay, a $21 billion company
that was founded in 1995, .
has been affected by Amazon
and other e-commerce platforms.
The company also let go of 500 workers in February of last year as it attempts to regain its footing following the end of the pandemic boom.
