During a week-long cease-fire in late November that saw numerous prisoner swaps and more frequent aid deliveries, fighting broke out between Israel and Hamas. Israel declared on December 3 that it has extended its ground offensive to encompass the whole Gaza Strip and ordered further evacuations. With nowhere safe to go, that leaves 2.3 million Gazans—roughly 80 percent of them, according to UN estimates, have already left their homes. Israel has conducted several operations mostly in and around the crowded cities of Khan Younis and Gaza, where Hamas is believed to have established itself under and within of civilian infrastructure. Israeli strikes have resulted in significant collateral damage. There are now just fifteen hospitals in operation, twelve of which are inoperable due to raids and a shortage of basic supplies.are in the south, and in addition to growing civilian casualties, the WHO has issued a warning concerning the spread of illness. Meanwhile, with simmering tensions around the area, the United States is engaging in shuttle diplomacy. Israel is still firing rockets at Hezbollah in Lebanon and purportedly hitting targets in Syria that are connected to Iran. The Houthi rebels in Yemen have fired missiles at Israel and commercial ships in the Red Sea, while organizations backed by Iran have carried out many strikes against American military installations in Iraq and Syria.
