Tottenham Women Score Magnificent Team Goal with Martha Thomas Securing FIRST Ever WSL Win

Tottenham women enjoyed a 1-0 victory over Arsenal in the capital on Saturday after Martha Thomas fired the hosts ahead with a terrific team goal.

It was an afternoon of history-making for Spurs, who secured their first-ever WSL win over Arsenal in the league's history.

Off the back of a 4-0 defeat at home to Manchester United last week, and losing on penalties to Arsenal just days ago in the Conti Cup campaign, Spurs made just one change heading into the North London derby clash.

just after the break, Tottenham enjoyed a spectacular team goal, playing out from the back with summer signing Barbora Vitokova making her first WSL start since joining the club.

Grace Clinton played the ball across to Martha Thomas, who passed to Norweigan Celin Bizet Ildhusøy who eventually secured the assist for Thomas' strike.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium erupted as the goal marked Spurs' first-ever league win against Arsenal, whose last WSL meeting was marked with a 5-1 win for the Gunners at the Emirates.

Robert Vilahamn, who took over as manager in July after Rehanne Skinner was sacked after a run of nine straight league defeats which left the club in tenth position in the league.

Arsenal made nine changes to their squad after Viviane Miedema enjoyed her first start for the Gunners since December 2022 due to an ACL injury.

Boss Jonas Eidevall opted for Cloe Lacasse, Frida Maanum, Stina Blackstenius, and Viviane Miedema as his choice of attackers for the cup clash, though swapped out all except Maanum on Saturday.

Beth Mead, Caitlin Foord, and Alessia Russo stepped in for the Gunners, though their impressive array of attackers was not enough to bypass Tottenham's solid defense.

Gunners star Miedema won her 100th WSL appearance as she geared up for her first full match in the Conti Cup clash during the week after recovering from a knee injury that ravaged the sharpshooter's 2022-23.

It was the first time the Dutch international lined up alongside both Beth Mead and Alessia Russo in what is likely to become Jonas Eidevall's preferred front three.

Arsenal have a titanic record in their North London Derby meetings, having won 11 of their 14 match-ups.

But Tottenham - who sit sixth in the table - are in impressive form under Vilahamn after last season saw them threatened with relegation in the first half of their 2022-23 campaign.

Eidevall's side was unable to maintain their unbeaten streak after enjoying a wonderful 4-1 victory against title-holders Chelsea at the Emirates and could see themselves dropping to third if Manchester City beat Everton at Walton Hall Park on Sunday.
