GM-Owned Cruise Slashes 900 Jobs Amid Safety Investigations And Recent Accidents
  • 4 months ago
Driverless car company Cruise, which is majority-owned by General Motors, is cutting 900 jobs or 24% of its workforce. The job cuts are happening as Cruise faces safety investigations from authorities in the US after recent accidents involving its vehicles. In October, California halted Cruise's driverless testing permit after two accidents where Cruise vehicles hit pedestrians. The CEO and a co-founder have also recently resigned. Cruise said the job cuts will allow it to "focus on more deliberate commercialization plans with safety as our North star." General Motors, which owns most of Cruise, supported the "difficult employment decisions." Cruise lost over $700 million in Q3 alone and has accumulated losses of over $8 billion since 2016.
