Lahaina Reopens After Deadly Wildfire, Residents and Business Owners Allowed Back with Day Passes
  • 4 months ago
The historic town of Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui reopened on Monday to residents and business owners with day passes, after a deadly wildfire in August that killed at least 100 people. Cleanup efforts are still underway. The US Environmental Protection Agency has been removing hazards from the town's over 2,000 destroyed buildings, while the US Army Corps of Engineers will begin hauling away remaining debris. Air monitors have been installed due to concerns over ash and dust, which testing found to contain toxic heavy metals like arsenic and lead.
