Putin has been the dominant leader in Russian politics since 1999, serving as president or prime minister. Securing another term in 2024 would keep him in power until at least 2030. Constitutional changes approved in 2008 and 2020 allow Putin to run for two additional 6-year terms as president after 2024. Running again in 2024 would allow Putin, who is now 71, to potentially remain in power until 2036.
