Mohammed Shami wasn't selected for the first four matches of the 2023 World Cup, but he ultimately emerged as the tournament's leading wicket-taker. A similar situation occurred in the 1975 World Cup, where an Australian all-rounder named Gary Gilmour was initially left out during the group stage. His first opportunity came in the semifinal against England, where Australia restricted England to 93, thanks to Gilmour's swinging ability and the uneven bounce. He finished with figures of 12-6-14-6.
However, the uneven bounce that troubled England also affected Australia, reducing them to 39-6. Gilmour once again came to Australia’s rescue, scoring an unbeaten 28 off 28 balls helping Australia reach the final. In the final against the mighty West Indies, he achieved another 5-wicket haul. Unfortunately, despite his efforts, Australia lost the final. Although he played only 2 matches, he ended up as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament.
