00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. It's time for another Car Expert Dragparison, where we do a bit of a drag race and a performance comparison.
00:06 Today, I thought we'd go with some SUVs, and not like crazy expensive SUVs.
00:11 These are both at their respective entry levels. We've got the Porsche Macan T and the BMW X3 xDrive30i.
00:18 So they're both kind of base models. Both have two litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engines.
00:22 Both of them are all-wheel drive. The Macan uses a dual-clutch transmission, whereas the X3 uses a torque converter.
00:29 The Macan pumps out just under 200 kilowatts of power and 400 newton-metres of torque.
00:35 And the X3 is slightly less at 185 kilowatts of power and 350 newton-metres of torque.
00:41 But it is important to note that the X3 is lighter than the Macan, and that Macan right there has about $30,000 of options on it,
00:48 which should make it a little bit heavier as well.
00:49 So, today we're going to do a drag race, we're going to do a sound comparison,
00:53 and then I'm going to log some performance numbers with our GPS measurement unit.
00:56 But let's get started and have a listen to the exhaust of these two.
00:59 [whoosh]
01:01 Just before we get into our drag race, let's have a listen to the exhaust note.
01:04 So this has the optional sports exhaust, so we'll have a listen first with the sports exhaust off,
01:10 and then sports exhaust on. I've got my colleague James in the car. Fire it up, James.
01:15 [engine revving]
01:23 Doesn't sound too bad. Um, all right, crack the exhaust up and let's have a listen.
01:26 [engine revving]
01:35 Yeah, it is a lot meatier when that exhaust is open.
01:37 So let's jump over to the X3 and see what that sounds like.
01:39 Okay, X3. So this doesn't have a sports exhaust, but we'll do it first in comfort and then sport.
01:44 Fire it up, James.
01:45 [engine revving]
01:55 It's got a little bit of rasp to it. Um, try sport mode, see if it gets any louder.
01:59 [engine revving]
02:08 It doesn't get much louder, but I actually quite like the exhaust sound. It doesn't sound too bad.
02:11 So, um, yeah, let me know in the comments section below which one do you reckon sounds better.
02:15 Let's jump into a drag race and see which is quicker in a straight line.
02:18 Okay, so it is time for our drag race.
02:21 Uh, I'm going to line up here next to James in the Macan.
02:25 So yeah, I mentioned before, um, this doesn't have launch control. That does.
02:29 And in terms of the official numbers, this is 0.1 of a second slower on paper than the Macan.
02:34 The Macan is 6.2 seconds, 0 to 100, and this is 6.3.
02:37 So it should be pretty close.
02:38 We're going to go to the eighth mile.
02:40 And once we're done with this drag race and figured out who the winner is,
02:43 I'm going to go through and do individual performance runs in each car,
02:46 so we can see exactly how fast they are against our GPS measurement device.
02:50 So I'm going to put this into Sport Plus,
02:53 and then I'm going to press stability control once I've limited traction.
02:58 James, are you ready to roll?
03:00 Okay, Igor, we are ready for our countdown.
03:05 3, 2, 1, go!
03:09 Ooh, ah, jump the start a little there.
03:12 That's just close.
03:14 He's pulling away though.
03:15 Oh, I think he's just going to have this come on!
03:18 Oh, I think he just had me there.
03:20 That is so annoying.
03:24 But I also jumped the start.
03:25 I reckon we're going to have to do that again.
03:27 Just a quick one for our adjudicator, Sean, up the back there.
03:32 Did I jump the start or was James too slow?
03:35 What happened?
03:35 Paul, you're all good.
03:36 You didn't jump the start.
03:37 Igor said go and you went, and James took a bit longer.
03:41 Is your launch control delayed?
03:43 Yeah, it seemed to take a split second after I lifted off to actually get going,
03:47 so it may have been me being slow or the car.
03:50 I'm going to blame the car.
03:51 All right, let's try it again.
03:52 Line up.
03:53 Okay, take two.
03:54 So James, I think with his launch control, it takes him a little bit for it to move.
03:59 I was perfect as usual.
04:00 We'll see how it goes this time around.
04:03 I think he's going to try lifting the brake a little earlier there,
04:06 so we'll see what happens.
04:08 All right, we are ready to go.
04:09 We're going to start the countdown.
04:10 Okay, in three, two, one, go.
04:14 A little jump there again.
04:18 It is so close.
04:21 Come on.
04:21 He just has me.
04:30 It's so annoying.
04:32 Okay, let's try that once more, except James is going to try it again.
04:39 Let's try that once more, except James just needs to get off the brake a little bit earlier,
04:43 so we can leave at the exact same time.
04:46 Okay, third time's a charm.
04:47 James is definitely going to let off the brake a little earlier this time.
04:51 So we'll see what happens.
04:52 So here we go.
04:53 We'll line up.
04:54 This is actually performing really well with the torque converter.
04:57 I'm quite surprised.
04:58 It would be good if it had launch control, but the torque converter is doing a good job.
05:01 All right, Egor, we are ready for our countdown.
05:03 In three, two, one, go.
05:08 That was better.
05:09 Okay, here we go.
05:09 Oh, it is still so close.
05:16 Oh.
05:17 There is only, there is just a car length between us.
05:26 And I think even when he launches it on time, it is still really, really close.
05:33 So yeah, the win goes to the Porsche Macan because yes, on paper it is quicker.
05:38 And I think ultimately, because it has launch control, it's actually quicker as well.
05:42 What if we try it without launch control?
05:45 I'm just keen to see what happens.
05:46 Okay, guys, so that was pretty close.
05:48 I reckon let's just do one last run.
05:50 This time, no launch control for you, James.
05:54 So you just, you just jump on the throttle, okay?
05:57 And let's see what happens.
05:59 Egor, count us in.
06:01 Okay, three, two, one, go.
06:04 Okay.
06:06 Oh, come on, come on.
06:11 Oh, damn it, he still has me.
06:13 Yeah, okay.
06:15 All right, cross the line.
06:16 Still a car length and James has comprehensively beaten me there.
06:23 So look, that was good fun.
06:25 I think we now know that the Macan is quicker, which it was on paper.
06:29 But yeah, I thought it was going to be heaps quicker than that.
06:32 So that is not too bad.
06:33 All right, let's jump into each car individually and then we'll do some
06:36 zero to 100 testing to see how quick they are in a straight line.
06:39 I'll do some brake testing as well.
06:41 Okay, so we're going to kick off with the X3 and I'll start off in comfort mode just so we can see
06:47 how quick it is without loading it up.
06:50 And then I'll go into sport mode and see progressively how much quicker it gets.
06:54 So we're in comfort.
06:55 I'm just going to mash the throttle and we'll see how we go.
06:58 I'll go all the way to 120 here as well so we can get our overtaking speed.
07:02 Here we go.
07:03 All right.
07:06 And that's 120 there.
07:10 I'll bring this up to a stop.
07:11 Okey dokey.
07:13 Let's have a little sticky beak here at our numbers and see how well we do.
07:17 I'll turn the hazard lights off.
07:18 So zero to 100, 7.79 seconds and 80 to 120.
07:27 In 4.76 seconds.
07:30 So we've got a benchmark to work with there.
07:32 We'll see if it gets any quicker when we do put it into sport mode and load the throttle up a bit.
07:35 Okay, next run here is going to be with sport mode active
07:42 and I'll put it in limited stability mode there as well.
07:44 You can see that little light pop up there.
07:46 I'm going to load the throttle up a bit.
07:47 This doesn't have launch control but it allows me to build the throttle up to about 3000 rpm
07:51 and then I'll just step on it.
07:53 So we'll see how we go all the way through to 120.
07:55 Here we go.
07:56 That's a nice solid start.
08:00 The accelerate's pretty hard.
08:02 All right, awesome.
08:04 All the way through to 120.
08:07 There it is there.
08:09 Come up to a stop.
08:10 Ignore our speed warning there.
08:12 Okay, so zero to 100, 6.49 seconds.
08:16 So significantly quicker in sport mode with limited stability there.
08:21 It really gets off the line much faster.
08:24 Our 80 to 120 is almost the exact same as well but even at 6.49 seconds,
08:30 it's still short of the official number of 6.3.
08:34 So that was interesting.
08:35 So all right, let's try doing a brake now and we'll see how quickly it stops from 100 to 0.
08:41 Then I'm going to jump in the Porsche and we'll give that a crack as well.
08:44 Next up, 100 to 0.
08:45 I'm going to get this up to 100 k's now, just over 100 k's now.
08:49 Slam the brake pedal down and we'll see how quick it takes to stop compared to the Porsche.
08:55 That's our marker just there.
08:57 This seatbelt is trying to strangle me as well.
09:06 That's awesome.
09:07 Good bit of safety tech there.
09:08 We'll kill our hazard lights.
09:10 Let's have a quick sticky beg here.
09:12 So 100 to 0 is 2.57 seconds in 35.54 metres.
09:19 So we've got some numbers to work with there.
09:21 We will jump in the Porsche now and do some acceleration figures and also a braking figure
09:25 as well.
09:25 I do expect that to stop better because it's got bigger tyres.
09:28 The brakes look bigger as well, so we'll see what happens.
09:32 Okay, Porsche time.
09:34 So yes, this does have launch control and all that fun stuff,
09:37 but we will just start off in the regular driving mode using our little switch here.
09:41 We'll just leave it in normal.
09:43 I'm just going to mash the throttle.
09:44 We'll get it up to 120 and have a look at our numbers and see how we go.
09:48 All right, it's all set up and ready.
09:49 Here we go.
09:49 Hesitates a little bit, but man, it kicks on and moves.
09:57 Love that little bark from the exhaust as well.
09:59 All right, there's 120 there.
10:02 We'll just come to a stop.
10:03 So 0 to 100, 6.99 seconds.
10:07 Still not too bad for just comfort mode and just jumping on the throttle.
10:10 And 80 to 120 was 4.48 seconds.
10:13 So that's really impressive too.
10:14 It shows you that mid-range has a fair bit of punch as well, which is nice.
10:19 All right, let's head back and let's try a little bit of launch control this time.
10:23 Okay, so actually before we do launch control, let me try sport mode.
10:27 I'll just see if I just go to like sport plus or something.
10:29 I'll just see if it's any quicker than comfort for just standing on the throttle.
10:33 So that's engaged the exhaust there.
10:35 It's also lowered the car a little bit and firmed up the suspension.
10:38 So let's give this a shot.
10:40 I'm just going to stand on the throttle.
10:41 We'll head over to 120 and we'll see what happens.
10:43 Here we go.
10:43 It does feel a little bit quicker.
10:49 Let's see what the numbers say.
10:52 Yeah, that does feel quicker.
10:57 All right, let's have a quick sticky beg here at the numbers.
11:00 0 to 100, 6.63 seconds.
11:03 So it's about 0.4 of a second quicker in sport plus than comfort without launch control.
11:08 And then 80 to 120 was 4.42 seconds, which was almost the exact same, just slightly quicker.
11:16 So interesting.
11:16 All right, let's go back and do launch control this time.
11:19 Okay, let's go for gold here.
11:21 I'm going to use launch control.
11:23 I'll be as aggressive as I can with it.
11:25 So I'll bring it to a stop.
11:26 I'm going to press the stability control button once to put it into that limited stability mode.
11:31 To activate launch control, foot hard on the brake, hard on the throttle.
11:34 It'll come up saying launch control ready.
11:36 And then I'll just dump the brake and away we go.
11:38 So here we go.
11:39 Got revs right up, doesn't it?
11:41 A little punch in the back.
11:43 All the way through to 120.
11:47 Yeah, that feels significantly quicker.
11:53 All right, let's have a little sticky beak at the number that we land on there.
11:56 Nice.
11:57 So 0 to 100 in 5.86 seconds.
12:00 That is significantly quicker than the claimed time.
12:02 The claimed time is 6.2.
12:04 So that's not too bad at all.
12:06 Very impressed with that.
12:08 And then on our 80 to 120, 4.46 seconds, which is almost identical to our last run as well.
12:15 So pretty impressive figures there from this for a 2 litre 4-cylinder.
12:19 And it weighs more than the X3 as well.
12:22 So nice and hardy numbers.
12:23 Let's try a 100 to 0 stop to see how quickly this thing pulls up with the old brakes that it has.
12:28 Okay, we'll get her up to 100 k's an hour.
12:31 We're just above and then I'm going to jam the anchors on.
12:34 Let's see how quickly we stop.
12:36 There's 100 there.
12:39 100 to 0, 2.64 seconds.
12:50 Oh, this is interesting.
12:51 And 36.97 metres.
12:54 Now, if I recall correctly, our results for the X3 were actually
13:01 35.54 metres.
13:03 So the X3 took almost, it's like a metre and a half shorter to stop.
13:10 That's quite surprising.
13:11 I was expecting this to actually pull up much quicker than that.
13:13 So there you go.
13:14 So I hope you enjoyed that.
13:20 Up on the screen, you'll see all the performance figures,
13:23 eighth mile, quarter mile, and also stopping and accelerating figures as well.
13:29 Do you want us to do more of these without sort of going too crazy with performance cars?
13:32 Because we can do more of this with just the standard stuff that a lot of people buy.
13:35 So let me know in the comments section below.
13:37 Were you surprised that the Macan won?
13:39 And do you think it should have won by more?
13:41 I was actually surprised it didn't stop quicker than the X3.
13:44 So I know the X3 is lighter, slightly, but it's got a pretty meaty set of brakes and it's a Porsche.
13:49 So anyway, let me know what you thought about the results in the comments section below.
13:53 And also let me know which other cars you want us to do drag parisons on in the future.
13:57 If you did enjoy this video, please make sure you like it and share it with your mates.
14:01 And if you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon.
14:04 But until next time, take it easy.
