Six football shirts worn by Lionel Messi throughout Argentina’s historic World Cup win in 2022 are expected to break auction records. The collection, which includes the jersey he wore in the first half of the final, is set to become the “most valuable collection of sports memorabilia". "A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to the UNICAS Project, led by Sant Joan de Deu Barcelona Children’s Hospital with the support of Leo Messi Foundation, to meet the needs of children suffering from rare diseases," said Sotheby’s. Sotheby’s said, “the collection estimate is in excess of $10 million,” though they refused to disclose to Reuters how much would be donated. The bidding war for the rare collection will be open from November 30 to December 14. Michael Jordan’s jersey from the opening game of the 1998 NBA Finals holds the record for most expensive game-worn memorabilia, at $10.1 million. Meanwhile, Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ worn jersey sold for $9.3 million in 2022, a record for game-worn soccer memorabilia.
