Locals At Birsa Munda’s Birthplace Ignored During PM Modi’s Visit

Ulihatu, the birthplace of tribal icon and Indian freedom fighter Birsa Munda is bustling on November 15, to mark the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His visit comes after last year President Droupadi Murmi visited Ulihatu on the same day.
However, the visits have failed to change the living conditions of the local tribal people, who told Outlook’s Md Asghar Khan that they are not even allowed to meet or interact with the leaders or officials.
Most of the population here belongs to the Munda tribe, whose main occupation is farming and manual labour, and lack basic necessities such as functioning schools and piped water. Subar Singh, 45, said “When the President came, the police told us not to leave the house. If any minister comes here, they are not allowed to meet the villagers. No one talks to us. It is humiliating.”
