On March 27, 2016, Virat Kohli produced one of the greatest T20I knocks in the virtual quarter-final clash of the ICC T20 World Cup against Australia to guide India to the semi-final of the tournament. Kohli resurrected India with his unbeaten 51-ball 82-run knock from a seemingly tricky position as the hosts sealed a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Australia lived up to everyone's expectations and posted a competitive total in 20 overs. Australian opening pair of Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja stitched a 54-run stand in just 4.1 overs before veteran pacer Ashish Nehra got the better of the southpaw. Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuvraj Singh then chipped in with crucial wickets of David Warner and Smith, leaving the Aussies reeling on 74-3 inside the first 10 overs.
