दीपावली पर अकसर चारों ओर दीपक जलाए जाते हैं, हालांकि सभी घरों में दीपावली के अलावा प्रतिदिन पूजा घर में दीपक जलाए जाने का प्रचलन है। दीपक जलाना बहुत ही शुभ होता है। कहते हैं कि इसको जलाने के कई तरह के कष्ट दूर होते हैं। दीपक भी कई प्रकार के होते हैं, जैसे चांदी के दीपक, मिट्टी के दीपक, लोहे के दीपक, ताम्बे के दीपक, पीतल की धातु से बने हुए दीपक और आटे से बनाए हुए दीपक। दीपावली पर मिट्टी के दीपक ही जलाने का महत्व है।

On Diwali, lamps are often lit all around, although in all the houses, apart from Diwali, there is a practice of lighting lamps in the puja room every day. Lighting a lamp is very auspicious. There is importance in lighting only earthen lamps on Diwali.
