Sixteen defendants were arrested in New York and Italy on charges related to Mafia activities, according to authorities. In New York, 10 men were arrested for allegedly belonging to the Gambino crime family and charged with various mafia-related crimes, while in Italy, 6 alleged organized crime members were arrested with 1 still at large. Prosecutors said the arrests were part of a coordinated operation between US and Italian law enforcement. The Gambinos are one of New York's five Cosa Nostra organized crime groups. It was formerly led by notorious boss John Gotti who died in prison in 2002. Prosecutors allege the New York defendants committed crimes in an effort to dominate New York's carting and demolition industries through extortion, violence and control of unions.
