US Aims for 'As Many Pauses as Necessary' in Gaza Conflict, for Humanitarian Aid and Safe Evacuations
  • 6 months ago
The Biden administration is calling for multiple "pauses" or temporary ceasefires in the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza to allow for humanitarian aid to enter and people to safely evacuate. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said they are looking to facilitate "as many pauses as necessary" following the success of a previous pause that allowed the US to extract two American hostages. Kirby stated these pauses would be temporary, localized ceasefires rather than a broad ceasefire, in order to accomplish specific humanitarian goals like aid delivery and evacuations. The US is coordinating with Israel and Egypt on facilitating additional pauses but the cooperation of Prime Minister Netanyahu is still uncertain.
