Ford Mustang Dark Horse Looks Great as Next-Gen NASCAR
He will make his race debut on February 4 at the Clash at the Coliseum.

The new, seventh-generation Ford Mustang will race in next year's NASCAR Cup Series. The automaker today unveiled its latest Dark Horse motorsport version, which will make its racing debut in the 'Clash at the Coliseum' series early next year.

The Mustang has raced full-time in NASCAR since 2011 and competes in the Xfinitiy Cup. He started racing in the Cup Series in 2019 and won 18 races the following year. Joey Logano won the drivers' championship by driving a Mustang to victory in 2022, and Ford hopes to build on those successes with its new race car.

Ford Performance worked with NASCAR racing teams to develop the vehicle. They "worked tirelessly in the wind tunnel" to create the car. NASCAR introduced Gen 7 race cars in 2022 to reduce costs for teams and make the cars more similar to their road counterparts.

The Blue Oval introduced the Mustang Dark Horse over a year ago, along with the track-only Dark Horse S and R. The hardware is the starting point for many of the automaker's new race cars. Under the hood of the road car is a spicier version of the brand's 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 500 horsepower and 418 pound-feet of torque.

The Dark Horse S is a stripped-down version of the rig for "weekend track day enthusiasts." The R is an even racier version that could compete in the new IMSA-sanctioned 2024 Mustang Challenge series.

The Mustang's first new nameplate in over two decades, Dark Horse underpins the GT3 and GT4. The GT4 has a 5.0-liter V8 engine based on the Coyote, while the GT3 competing at the 2024 Hour of Le Mans has a larger 5.4-liter V8 engine from the M-Sport.

The 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Mustang Dark Horse will debut on February 4. The car will compete in the Clash at the Coliseum at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The new Mustang is now eligible to compete for the podium on six continents.
