Moment beachfront café filled with water after Storm Ciarán smashed windows and doors
  • 6 months ago
A popular beachfront café was forced to close today after storm Ciarán caused it significant damage.

James Tribble, the owner of The Hideaway in Seaton, Devon, was woken up by an alert on his motion detection security camera at the restaurant at 7:15am.

James, 43, went to check the cameras and was shocked by what he saw.

He said: "It was a picture of the front door being blown in and one of the windows being blown out.

"I'm standing foot deep in a pile of pebbles and there's council signage and the coastal path sign on the floor.

"Never in the ten years that I've lived in Seaton have I had water come up and encircle the building and water dump in."

James says that The Hideaway is the worst affected business in Seaton due to its position only 25ft away from the beachfront.

Despite seeing the damage on his security cameras he was unable to get to the scene immediately as it was high tide and he didn't want to risk his safety in the storm.

James and his wife, Carly, 43, are now trying to get in contact with their insurance provider to see what can be done about the damage.

James is also in contact with East Devon district council as the council owns the building and James rents it from them.

He said: "I'm going to secure the building so there's no looting but I can't do anything else."

In a Facebook post uploaded to The Hideaway's page this morning, James wrote:

"Dear Customers,

"The Hideaway has sustained damage from Storm Ciaran. The storm door and front doors have been pushed in and water has come all through the restaurant.

"We will be closed until we can repair and make our cafe safe again.

"Please DONOT come down to look in as it’s still very dangerous. We will keep everyone posted with news as much as possible."

On Wednesday, a post has been uploaded to inform customers the restaurant would be closed on Thursday because of the "incoming storm and risk of high winds and flooding", but that it would be back open today (Friday) at 9am
