In this video, Dr. Kung and Dr. Gino discuss post-operative care for a tooth extraction.

Even though our natural teeth are meant to last us a lifetime, there are several reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted. Sometimes it may be due to trauma, decay, or infection. Other times, dentists remove teeth that are impacted in the gums (wisdom teeth).

Here are some tips for healing after your extraction appointment:
- Take it easy for 24 hours after the appointment: avoid strenuous activity and exercise
- Bleeding may last up to 24 hours
- Bite down on a clean gauze pad to control the bleeding
- Change the gauze pad every 35 to 45 min, or as needed
- Swelling and soreness can occur: Apply a cold pack on the outside of the treated area for 15 minutes on and minutes off
- Alternate ibuprofen and Tylenol for pain
- If prescribed antibiotics, take the full course of medication as directed
- Resume good oral hygiene but avoid the extraction site until after your post-operative appointment
- Use a saltwater rinse to clean the area
- A soft food diet is recommended for the first few days
- Drink plenty of liquids but do not use a straw
- Avoid caffeine, smoking, and alcohol for the first 48 to 72 hours
- Keep your post-operative appointment so that we can monitor your healing
- While discomfort and mild swelling are normal, call us immediately if you experience more severe pain, which may be a dry socket

Dr. Kung has extensive experience in extractions and oral surgery, and our dentists are here to help you maintain your oral health.
