Illegal Traffic Stops - March 18, 2023

On Sunday, March 18th, 2023, a Caldwell Parish Sheriff's Office deputy stopped a motorist that had a temporary tag in the back glass. After running their information he let them go, but while he was on that stop, another officer stopped a motorist for legitimate reasons. He recognized the person's name and had dispatch run a warrant check, which came back negative.

You see, this deputy was formerly the police chief in the neighboring LaSalle Parish town of Olla until voters ousted him in 2018. I guess that person must've voted against him in '18 or '22, filed complaints against his officers, or something else.

Later that night, a nightshift deputy stopped a motorist for "no tag displayed." As with 98% of these "no plate" stops, the vehicle had a temporary tag in the back glass. The deputy hinted at that at the start by saying it "may be a temp tag, can't see it from [his truck]." Apparently it was all clear because he let them go pretty quickly.

These deputies LOVE using very petty things like having a temp tag, having a trailer ball, pulling a trailer, only one (of two) license plate lights working, etc. as reasons to stop random motorists. Especially the temp tags. In fact, in late 2020, a now-former deputy spotted a new car parked in a driveway and conspired with this deputy (19) to later stop the car under the guise of "no plate."
