The accident that claimed the lives of three race marshals occurred on the second lap of the final race of the Vuelta de La Plata, held on Sunday, 23 November 1986 at the 13.600-kilometer "19 de Noviembre" semi-permanent track in La Plata, province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, which was inaugurated in 1981.

While travelling at a speed of about 150 km/h, Miguel Ángel Atauri lost control of his Dodge Cupé GTX and ended over one of the roudabout on the crossing of the Ruta 36 with the road towards Abasto. The car swerved on the left side and overturned, hitting three race marshals who were killed.

The victims were: Juan Carlos Otero, 26-year-old state employee, operating as security auxiliary marshal in the event, who was taken to the Hospital de Melchor Romero where he died shortly afterwards; flagman Rubén Carlos Cabanes, from La Plata; the name of the third deceased person was not released. After the tragedy, the race was suspended.

Five years before, Atauri was involved in another accident that resulted in the deaths of three spectators during the Vuelta de Ayacucho on 06 December 1981.

The Turismo Carretera race at La Plata held on 07 July 1991, in a shortened version of "19 de Noviembre" semi-permanent track, was marred by a very similar accident, which also claimed the lives of three race marshals, killed by Osvaldo Duarte's out of control car.
