Queensland rider Oscar McIntyre, 17, lost his life in an accident which happened during a support race to the 2012 FIM World Superbike Championship opening meeting at Phillip Island, Australia.

It happened on Saturday, 25 February 2012, on lap two of the scheduled 12-lap combined Supersport and Superstock 600 categories race. Oscar McIntyre lost control of his Yamaha YZF-R6 and failed to enter the first turn, known as "Doohan Corner", passing over the run-off area. He returned on track at the end of the "Southern Loop", between turns two and three of the circuit, ending up just in the path of two oncoming riders, Luke Burgess and Michael Lockhart. McIntyre was involved in a crash with them.

McIntyre was immediately reached by medical personnel after the accident, receiving treatment in the circuit’s medical centre. But his injuries proved to be fatal. Burgess and Lockhart sustaind minor injuries in the crash.

Owing to the accident the "Superpole" final qualifying round for the 22-lap World Superbike race was initially postponed by an hour and then was cancelled.
