Bizarre Moment: Tottenham star James Maddison is left red-faced as he struggles with his water bottle only for Harry Maguire to come to his rescue ahead of England's clash with Australia at Wembley

Just as England struggled to make the breakthrough in the first half of their clash with Australia on Friday night, James Maddison had issues working out how to use his water bottle.

The Three Lions took on the Socceroos under the un-lit Wembley arches in a game that has been preceded by much talk over what gesture the sides will make to mark the current situation in Israel.

While there had been calls for the Israeli flag colors - blue and white - to be cast on the famous arches in northwest London, it was decided that players would wear black armbands and observe a moment's silence instead.

Gareth Southgate named 10 changes from the XI that took on Scotland at Hampden Park last month, with only Lewis Dunk keeping his place, as Maddison returned to the fold.

The Tottenham forward could not carve out much of an opportunity for either himself or his team-mates in a drab opening 45 minutes but was caught out struggling with his water bottle ahead of kick-off.

The 26-year-old looked to grab a quick drink on the sidelines on a wet night in the capital but was caught out by the sports bottle's design.

Rather than a regular spout straight out the top of the bottle, the jet was directed at a right angle.

As Maddison looked to bring it to his mouth, he squeezed the bottle only for the water to fly out the other side.

He tried this not once, but three times, before substitute Harry Maguire gave him some advice on how best to hydrate himself.

The hosts failed to entertain in the game's early stages, with Australia frustrating Southgate's side.

Without regular goal machine Harry Kane leading the line, Ollie Watkins found life difficult in breaking down the visitors' largely resolute defense.

Leicester star Harry Souttar put in several good tackles, with a well-timed challenge in the dying seconds of the first half denying the hosts a goal-scoring opportunity to cap a poor 45 minutes.
