A side remains within the grasp of playoff contention after achieving a solid 3-1 win at home.

Newark Town welcomed Saffron Dynamo to the YMCA for their United Counties League Division One fixture.

The Blues welcomed Jack Beckett back into their starting line-up from injury and also unveiled a new signing —  Joe Braithwaite from nearby step-five side Sleaford Town.

Newark opened the scoring with captain Lewis Chambers hitting one from the spot after Beckett was awarded the penalty.

Less than five minutes later, it was Saffron Dynamo's turn for a penalty which was successfully converted by Jack Scott in the 26th minute.

It would be the only time the away side got on the board though as Lucus Cotterill scored both sides of the half-time whistle to give The Blues a two-goal victory.

Cotterill put his second goal away in the 88th minute to put the game beyond doubt in front of a crowd of 161.

"We weren't at our best but we were pleased to get the 3 points," said manager Luke Parsons.

"Other than the penalty we weren't really in much trouble and we managed to create some decent chances at the opposite end to win the game."

Newark Town announced the departure of their assistant manager Steven Venables who is looking for new challenges.

The Blues said they wished him all the best with his future.

Newark Town faced step five team Sherwood Colliery in the Notts Senior Cup last night as they travelled for the match.
