History: Istanbul has a long and storied history dating back to ancient times. It was originally known as Byzantium and later Constantinople when it became the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. In 1453, it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and became known as Istanbul. It served as the capital of the Ottoman Empire until 1923 when modern Turkey was founded, and Ankara became the new capital.
