00:00 Lauren Boebert said it would be "childish, vengeful" for Republicans to remove Matt
00:04 Gaetz after he led McCarthy's ousting.
00:06 Rep Lauren Boebert of Colorado on Thursday warned her GOP colleagues about retaliating
00:11 against Rep Matt Gaetz for his role in ousting Kevin McCarthy.
00:14 "My colleagues would be sorely mistaken to take a childish, vengeful route and try
00:18 to expel my friend @MattGaetz for standing up to failed leadership," she wrote on X,
00:23 formerly known as Twitter.
00:24 Boebert is now one of the few Republican figures to defend Gaetz.
00:28 After the Florida representative called for a vote that ultimately removed McCarthy as
00:32 House Speaker on Wednesday, Gaetz, who used a motion to vacate to call for a chamber-wide
00:37 referendum against McCarthy, had been one of eight Republicans who voted to fire their
00:41 former party leader from his role.
00:43 Boebert was not among the eight to break party lines.
00:46 She had voted against the motion to vacate, saying she "didn't want to spend valuable
00:49 time on a long, protracted speaker fight."
00:52 But she gets, and other hard-right lawmakers regularly clash with McCarthy as he vied for
00:57 the speakership in January and eventually assumed the position.
01:00 As McCarthy of California tried to wrangle the votes he needed to become Speaker, Boebert
01:05 and Gaetz were part of the hard-right faction that refused to support him unless he gave
01:09 them certain concessions.
01:10 One of those concessions was to allow any single member of the House to call for the
01:14 Speaker's removal.
01:15 The very rule used to push McCarthy out.
01:17 After McCarthy was voted out, multiple corners of the GOP bashed Gaetz's method of booting
01:22 the former Speaker, with some taking aim at Gaetz himself.
01:25 "Matt Gaetz just got schooled by AOC and others.
01:28 He was totally manipulated into doing this," Rep. Garrett Graves of Louisiana said on Wednesday,
01:33 per The Hill.
01:34 And the Republican Main Street Caucus, which consists of around 70 moderate GOP congressional
01:39 leaders, declared that it would only support a future Speaker who answered how he or she
01:43 would prevent another ousting like the one led by Gaetz.
01:46 Even Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell weighed in, saying on Wednesday that the motion
01:51 to vacate made the Speaker's rule impossible and advised Republicans to ax the rule.
01:56 Meanwhile, McCarthy accused Gaetz of acting against him as personal payback for a House
02:01 Ethics Committee investigation that looked into allegations of sexual misconduct against
02:05 Gaetz.
02:06 A representative for Boebert did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside
02:10 regular business hours.
02:12 Republicans consider killing motion to vacate rule that Gaetz used to oust McCarthy.
02:16 Many Republican lawmakers have posed raising the threshold to trigger a no-confidence vote
02:21 in the next House Speaker or ditching the rule altogether, after Kevin McCarthy was
02:25 ousted from the role Tuesday.
02:27 The California Republican paved the way for his own dismissal in January as he sought
02:31 enough support to become the lower chamber's leader, making a deal with far-right Republicans
02:35 that a single member could bring a motion to vacate the chair, a vote of no confidence
02:40 in the Speaker.
02:41 McCarthy's ouster was the first time in U.S. history a House Speaker has been removed by
02:45 such a motion.
02:46 Without an elected Speaker, legislative business in the House is now at a standstill as the
02:50 federal government inches toward a mid-November deadline to avoid a government shutdown.
02:55 A potential vote on the next Speaker could come as soon as next week, but the divide
02:59 over whether to change the rule could complicate the path to winning the gavel.
03:03 Republican Rep. Carlos Duminez of Florida said he would not support any candidate until
03:07 there is a commitment to reform the rule.
03:09 No one can govern effectively while being threatened by fringe hostage-takers, he wrote
03:13 on social media.
03:15 Republican Rep. Mark Molinero of New York called the motion to vacate a "bad precedent"
03:19 and said the threshold should be "very high."
03:21 "It is an absolute mistake to allow such a small number of folks to be able to initiate
03:26 such a disruptive process, and hopefully we revisit it," Molinero told reporters Wednesday.
03:31 The threshold for bringing a motion to vacate was a single member until 2019, when Democrats
03:36 won the majority.
03:37 Then, a majority of either party had to agree to it.
03:40 As he sought to win over far-right holdouts in January, McCarthy proposed a threshold
03:44 of five members, but that didn't satisfy some of the most conservative members of his
03:48 party.
03:49 McCarthy ultimately agreed to give a single member the power to force a no-confidence
03:53 vote.
03:54 On Tuesday, eight Republican detractors led by Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida and all Democrats
03:59 voted to oust McCarthy.
04:00 Rep. Garrett Graves, a McCarthy ally, said Gaetz's move has created so much chaos.
04:06 The Louisiana Republican indicated that he wanted to see a rule change before the election
04:10 of a new speaker.
04:11 "I think one of the first things we need to do before electing a new speaker is help
04:15 to solidify the position," he told CBS News on Wednesday.
04:18 "This is third in line of the president of the United States.
04:22 It's unreasonable to have this type of chaos or vulnerability."
04:25 The Main Street Caucus, a pragmatic group of dozens of conservatives, said continuance
04:30 of the one-person threshold will keep a chokehold on this body through 2024.
04:35 Personal politics should never again be used to trump the will of the 96% of House conservatives.
04:40 The group said in a statement, "Any candidate for speaker must explain to us how what happened
04:44 on Tuesday will never happen again."
04:46 Announcing that he would not run again for speaker, McCarthy said his advice for the
04:50 next speaker is to change the rules.
04:52 Republican Rep. Lauren Bogart of Colorado said she's open to ditching the rule as
04:56 long her preferred candidate, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, wins the speakership.
05:00 Gaetz has said she would require the future speaker to keep the one-person threshold.
05:05 Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has also weighed in, calling on House Republicans
05:09 to get rid of the motion.
05:10 "It makes the speaker job impossible," the Kentucky Republican told reporters Wednesday.
