00:00 On this episode of Roadkill, zero fail.
00:03 We built this garbage and drove it 2,500 miles to Power Tour.

00:10 We suck less this time.
00:11 A little bit less.

00:33 Last time on Roadkill, you saw us working on this car,
00:36 our '55 Chevy Gasser with 530 cubic inches
00:40 and 700 horsepower worth of Mopar Hemi in it.
00:44 It's also got an American Powertrain 6-speed
00:47 and 543 axle gears,
00:49 but that is not gonna stop us from hitting the road
00:51 because we wrapped it up just in time
00:53 to hit the highway two-lane blacktop style.
00:56 [engine revving]
01:01 Well, the car has a new name and a new home
01:06 because we got kicked out of the Hot Rod garage
01:08 when they decided to kill the power last night at about 8.
01:11 And we're leaving this morning with still a bunch of work left to do.
01:14 We've got to finish the harness bar,
01:16 figure out why the clutch is leaking,
01:19 and I think Bolton is seat for Fryburger
01:21 because he kind of wants to drive on this trip.
01:23 And where are we going?
01:25 North Carolina.
01:27 Charlotte.
01:29 Yeah, it's 2,500 miles from here, I think,
01:31 and we have 5 1/2 days to get there.

01:42 We hit Finnegan's shop at 6 a.m.,

03:11 It's Monday now.
03:13 We hit the road last night figuring we were going to go about 500 miles,
03:16 and we made it, like, 150.
03:19 So we got to crank.
03:20 It sits too high in the front.
03:22 We need to pull a leaf out of the front and crank up the coils in the back.
03:24 I agree.
03:26 But not now.
03:27 Not now.
03:28 Let's go.
03:29 Buckle up with your new seat belts.
03:33 Sweet!
03:36 I love this job.
03:38 We woke up on day 2 in Barstow, California,
03:41 and at this point we still had 2,450 miles to go
03:45 and only five days to get there, which meant more miles per day.
03:48 But this is roadkill, and new stuff was going to slow us down,
03:52 and the first thing was really stupid.
03:55 We were cruising along the highway,
03:57 and it started to, like, surge really quickly,
04:01 and then it, like, backfired.
04:02 I thought we were running out of gas, but it doesn't seem to be,
04:05 so we're looking at the tune-up.
04:08 This says everything's fine,
04:10 but we have no gas gauge nor speedometer, you know.
04:14 Either one of those things would be useful right now,
04:16 because we don't know how far we've driven,
04:18 nor do we know what gas is in the tank.
04:21 We do know volts, oil, and temp.
04:24 Which is better than normal, so I'd say hit it.
04:27 We're living large. Let's go.
04:29 It'll be fine.
04:31 Ready?
04:32 Yep.
04:34 That was probably me.

04:47 Seven miles per gallon.
04:50 You were going, allegedly, 95 to 100-ish at certain points of that.

04:55 Up a mountain, so...
04:57 The Hemi and the Chevy wasn't such a good idea after all.
05:00 [laughs]
05:01 This is going to be expensive.
05:03 Oh, boy.
05:04 Let's just start running the 87.
05:06 Here's a question.
05:07 Will five gallons get us 17 miles to Seligman, Arizona?
05:11 I have times seven.
05:12 Yeah, if we're still getting seven miles to the gallon,
05:15 that gets us there.
05:16 Okay.
05:17 I feel like an orange challenger.
05:19 I think all of the challengers are orange.

05:34 [engine revving]
05:39 After running out of gas, it looked like we were going to be home free.
05:42 The car was working surprisingly well for something that we had thrown together
05:46 and driven around the block before we hit the road.
05:48 But then it started to bite us.
05:53 Okay.
05:55 This threaded little doohickey right here goes in the middle of the clutch rod
05:59 to adjust the overall length of it,
06:01 and it was out at the end of its adjustment and obviously backed off a little bit
06:04 and came apart.
06:05 See how the thread's gacked?
06:07 Oh, it came out?
06:08 It came out, right, because it's missing a lock nut.
06:12 So we need to un-gack that, and then it'll thread right back together,
06:16 and it would be great if I could find a lock nut for it.
06:21 I'm going to carve out pieces of metal that are in my way from threading it back on.
06:27 [engine revving]
06:29 We didn't fully fix the clutch at the side of the road,
06:31 so it was still hanging up by the time we hit Flagstaff, Arizona.
06:34 But we met a fan there who worked at a Chevy dealership and was going to hook us up.
06:39 It appears Home Depot doesn't believe in having fine-thread bolts, taps, or all-thread.
06:44 So we're going to have to fix what we have.
06:47 And Henry works at this Chevy dealership and was kind enough to bring us inside his house
06:52 and let us borrow his tools, which is like borrowing somebody's woman.
06:56 This is kind of a big deal.
07:00 You can see the metal coming out of it as it cleans up the threads.
07:06 Here we go, good as new.
07:09 There's never been a '55 Chevy with a Hemi in it in a dealership in Arizona
07:14 while fixing clutch like it did before.
07:15 Never.
07:16 First ever.
07:17 Setting records.
07:19 This guy Henry was totally cool,
07:21 and the least we could do was just run him around the block in the '55.
07:25 [engine revving]
07:27 Kind of surreal, honestly.
07:29 Why's that?
07:31 It's just--it's surreal.
07:33 I don't--I kind of like have to smack myself to realize I'm actually in the car
07:39 with David Freiberger driving the Blast to me around the town I live in.
07:45 The other thing that Henry pointed out to us was that one of the places where they had shot the Tulane Blacktop movie
07:50 was just up the road, Mary's Cafe, where they shot that scene where the guys pick up the girl,
07:55 and all of a sudden it dawned on us, without even planning it,
07:58 our whole road trip was following about the same route as the guys in the Tulane Blacktop movie.
08:03 [engine revving]
08:05 [music]
08:13 We had to pull over because there was so much smoke in the cabin,
08:16 it was just brutal, and it seemed like the regular road kill exhaust leak,
08:21 but we can't find that.
08:23 But the transmission is just puking everywhere, and we can't figure out why or where.
08:29 Let's just hit the road.
08:31 By the end of the day, the '55 was running good, and we were feeling good,
08:34 and we made it all the way into Gallup, New Mexico.
08:37 [music]
08:40 Got about four hours of sleep in a seedy motel in Gallup, New Mexico,
08:46 and we got about 650 miles we need to go today.
08:52 One thing we've been battling the whole time on this trip is that the clutch pedal feels funky,
08:56 and I got it so that it was really good, but then the adjuster screwed itself out,
09:01 and it fell apart yesterday, and ever since then we haven't been able to get the clutch pedal to feel right.
09:05 So I put in some more adjustment today.
09:08 Right now we're bleeding it just because who knows,
09:11 and now I'm checking the master cylinder to make sure that I'm not bleeding it dry, which I'm not.
09:17 So we're going to give this another shot.
09:19 Okay, pump her up.
09:21 One, two, three.
09:25 Holding.
09:27 Hey, not out of air.
09:31 Yeah, it went all the way to the floor when I was holding it.
09:34 I think it's better.
09:35 It still has that little kink in it, but I think it's better.
09:40 This slot is all the way down.
09:43 That is not coming out, and there's no way to get a wrench on that.
09:48 And the other side is rammed up against the firewall.
09:52 Better.
09:54 Move it more?
09:55 Yeah, go just a hair more because it's got a little bit of rub still.
09:59 So it is bottoming on that--or not bottoming on the piston, but rubbing the underside of the piston.
10:03 Yeah, that was the problem.
10:06 Okay, let's stop somewhere and get fluid because it's now pretty low.
10:11 Day three turned out to be pretty much the cruise we were hoping for.
10:19 Virtually nothing went wrong with the car, and we spent the day with the laptop open just tuning on our fast EFI.
10:25 We ultimately got 17 miles per gallon out of that big Hemi.
10:32 Ooh, it is Africa hot.
10:36 It's about 100 degrees out.
10:38 The car is running at about 215 degrees, and all of a sudden it just kerked off.
10:44 I'm not sure why, so we coasted for a little while and turned it back on, and it fired right back up.
10:49 So, I don't know.
10:52 We'll keep going, I guess.
10:56 [Music]
10:59 You probably recognize these guys from their hugely popular TV show, "Street Outlaws,"
11:07 and we came by their shop to hang out with Big Chief and Murder Nova.
11:11 Hope you don't mind if we're using your shade.
11:14 How's it going?
11:15 What's going on, man? How are you?
11:16 The usual.
11:17 Looks good.
11:18 Yeah, it looks good.
11:19 It's been running hard.
11:20 That's a sweet-ass steering wheel.
11:22 Oh, yeah, that's one of the best parts of the whole thing.
11:25 It looks like Ray Charles welded the headers with his feet.

11:31 [Bleep]
11:32 [Bleep]

11:34 So, the engine had two miles on it, was completely untuned, and you hit the highway.
11:40 Yeah.
11:41 Dude, God, I want to do that so bad-ass.
11:43 It had a little bit of a tune in it.
11:44 How are the fumes in the car? Are they good?
11:46 Um...
11:47 A little bit of fumes.
11:48 Yeah.
11:49 Is there?
11:50 That's what keeps us going without a little bit of carbon monoxide.
11:53 [Laughter]
11:55 The fumes keep you awake, really.
11:57 I love it.
11:58 I don't think you're allowed to weld that bar together, are you?
12:01 Yeah, there was going to be some foam over that.
12:03 [Laughter]
12:05 Sometimes, man, you got to do what you got to do.
12:07 Put your pad over it.
12:09 There was going to be some foam over that.
12:10 Sometimes you need four foot and you only got two feet.
12:12 [Laughter]
12:13 When you were thinking this thing up, were you thinking about how cool it was?
12:16 Yeah, for sure.
12:18 I wanted the two-lane blacktop car, and it was his idea to put the Hemi in it.
12:22 Yeah, I wanted to do the Hemi in it for a long time.
12:24 So you've driven it halfway across the country already.
12:27 If there's anything that you could change about the car up to this point,
12:30 besides the passenger, what would it be?
12:33 [Laughter]
12:34 Passenger's a given.
12:35 [Laughter]
12:38 I don't know.
12:39 Nothing, really.
12:40 I mean, if you had to do it all over, you'd do everything exactly the same?
12:44 I'm happy with it.
12:45 Really?
12:46 Yeah.
12:47 It's cool.
12:48 Dents and all, I'm cool with it.
12:49 What do the people on the highway think when they pass by?
12:51 Our chicks just throw themselves at us.
12:53 It's ridiculous.
12:54 I've never done a burnout in a stick shift '55 with a Hemi and fuel injection.
13:00 No one but us has.
13:01 [Laughter]
13:03 You can't get a whole lot done when you're just standing around laughing with your buddies,
13:06 so the time came that we had to get a whole bunch of just little stuff done on the car.
13:10 Be gentle.
13:14 Hate that.
13:16 That's the worst.
13:18 I thought if it was wallered out, that means it's like worn out to an oval.
13:22 Well, wallered out is bigger than it should be.
13:24 Okay.
13:25 That needs a little bit of wallering out.
13:26 If somebody says your girlfriend's all wallered out, that's bad.
13:27 Yeah, that's probably not good.
13:28 [Laughter]
13:29 Around here, you might actually get into a fight.
13:31 Okay.
13:32 [Laughter]
13:33 Sorry, car.
13:38 All I can tell is it's coming off the edge.

14:12 It's way more cooler now that I've sat in it.

14:16 Because you get a feeling looking inside.
14:18 It's a two-lane blacktop.
14:19 Not just that, but you get a feeling of the road.
14:21 Like, you know what I mean?
14:23 There's little things done to the car for a road trip that's not done to most of the race cars I sit in.
14:28 You know what I mean?
14:29 Like there's a cell phone holder.
14:30 And the cup holder.
14:31 And the cup holder.
14:32 And the cell phone charger.
14:33 And then the glove box open with, you know, what used to be your money in it.
14:38 Right.
14:39 [Laughter]
14:40 Yeah, that's really cool.
14:45 I'm digging on it.
14:46 Cool.
14:47 Thank you.
14:48 You're going to have to make one?
14:50 We're going to have to make one.
14:52 At the end of the day, Big Chief was pretty much scared to drive the 55 because he knew he would break it.
14:57 And so Finnegan hopped in with Sean and gave him a quick ride.
15:00 So the cops really don't hassle you around here or what?
15:03 It's amazing.

15:24 Good time, everybody.
15:25 Thanks for helping, for hanging out.
15:26 It was awesome.
15:27 Had a lot of fun.
15:28 Yeah, that was great.
15:29 Thank you.
15:31 I believe they let us ruin their shop all day.
15:42 It's Thursday morning now and we're in Little Rock, Arkansas.
15:45 Today it's an eight-hour jaunt over to Atlanta and we're going to stop at Comp Cams along the way.
15:49 And other than that, we don't really have a plan.
15:51 Finnegan's on the phone with Matthew Bob trying to sort out some of our fuel injection issues
15:55 and figure out timing at cruise so we can get even a little bit better gas mileage than the 17 that we've already hit.
16:02 Yeah, when you let the clutch out, it didn't look like it shattered at all.
16:05 Yeah.
16:07 Surging a little bit right here, though, huh?
16:10 Okay, hold on.
16:11 Let me fatten it up a little.
16:13 Totally fixed.
16:15 Amazing.
16:16 Awesome.
16:17 That is cool.
16:24 We're just over now in Arkansas because we had a little bit of oil mist on one of the GoPros on the back of the car.
16:29 But we don't think it's any big deal.
16:31 It's kind of normal stuff.
16:32 We were on it pretty hard out on the highway.
16:34 It might have just fogged a little out the breather exhaust or something.
16:37 It was also only doing that when we were driving about 140, so I'll just sort of lay off the 140 from now on.
16:45 The back of the car is ice skating right now.
16:47 Yep.
16:48 Told you, 10 miles an hour.
16:50 Those two teeny tiny grooves in those slicks are the only thing saving us right now.
16:57 Hi there.
16:58 I'm driving in the rain on drag slicks right now, and I'm looking for some new rear tires.
17:02 I'm wondering if you have something like a 275/60/15.
17:08 Do you have any 15-inch tires at all?
17:13 Huh.
17:14 That wasn't boring.
17:15 Wow.
17:17 These guys only being able to go like 8 to 10 miles an hour on drag slicks in the rain.
17:23 I don't know if that's good or bad, but we just went 35, so still alive, still in one piece, still making progress.
17:33 Right outside of Memphis, it started to rain really badly.
17:37 And in case you hadn't noticed, we're driving this thing on drag slicks.
17:41 That meant we were not going to be able to stop at cop cams and visit our buddies there in Memphis.
17:45 We had to keep on the road and just make time.
17:48 I'm in trouble because I already have the sense of victory, because we're here in Atlanta,
17:59 which is only four hours from Charlotte, where I need to be tonight,
18:02 which probably means I won't get fired for missing this event I'm required to attend.
18:05 Home stretch.
18:06 But right now, it's 10.15.
18:09 We agreed we were going to be wheels up at 10 o'clock.
18:12 We're going over to Rutledge Woods House, and he's going to throw us out by at least noon, I'm guessing earlier.
18:19 And then we're going to hit the road and hope that we make it.
18:22 We're huge Top Gear fans, so if we're going through Atlanta, we've got to stop by Rutledge Woods House.
18:29 Yep, that'd be it.
18:33 Oh, look at that.
18:37 It drills out from LA.
18:41 Oh, yeah.
18:43 That thing is so awesome.
18:45 Sorry to stink up your town.
18:49 It's so much more ridiculous than I thought.
18:53 I'm so impressed at the sheer size of your nuts.
18:57 You've seen Top Gear. We do some pretty dumb stuff.
19:01 This is much dumber than the things that we do.
19:04 I don't know, dude. Can I see the hand?
19:06 Oh, please.
19:07 I've never actually... I saw it at SEMA, but I've never...
19:10 I wanted the hot rod family hauler that could still pull a trailer.
19:16 So it's on a 99-2500 frame that we shortened.
19:20 That's a big project.
19:21 That's a big project, because you kind of don't know.
19:23 Now it's got cats on there, and it comes out both sides.
19:27 It's got really nice sheet metal work.
19:29 Yeah, this is Lucra out of San Diego.
19:34 So they built the dash for me, did the engine cover.
19:38 But it's got vintage air.
19:40 It's got a GPS speedo, because I learned that lesson, too.
19:43 I made it to Bristol, Tennessee in like four and a half hours,
19:46 and apparently it's like a six-hour trip.
19:48 [laughter]
19:49 What's the name?
19:51 Oh, yeah.
19:54 Is it a small block or a big block?
19:56 A small block. It's the...
19:59 Six liter?
20:00 It's a 6.2 LS3, 525 horse.
20:04 You guys want to go for a ride?
20:06 Yeah, let's spin it around.
20:07 Rutledge's van is an all-aluminum-bodied '49 Chevy Curbmaster.
20:12 Not exactly your mainstream hot rod, but a lot of fun.
20:16 [engine revving]
20:18 Oh, my God, it's not bad.
20:20 [engine revving]
20:23 Oh!
20:25 This is one hell of a nice wind drop.
20:27 [engine revving]
20:30 That's 90 miles an hour.
20:32 That was all about the right school.
20:35 [laughter]
20:37 Mint!
20:39 You know that part at the end of the show, we were always like,
20:41 "Hey, who makes a show?"
20:42 These guys. Yeah, you look good.
20:44 It wasn't me.
20:45 Hey, you look sharp out there.
20:46 Thank you.
20:47 You look sweaty?
20:48 A little bit.
20:49 Hey, if you guys could just do, like when you're on the road,
20:50 just more of these like dramatic, like...
20:52 Oh, yeah.
20:53 Yeah, we don't get much of that.
20:54 Because my nostrils aren't big enough.
20:55 Dude, look at that sun. Gosh, you look good.
20:57 Here, you gotta do the reality show pose, too, right?
21:00 Is that what it is?
21:01 Yeah, stand awkwardly close and look like that.
21:04 Isn't that what we're supposed to do?
21:06 You and your throne of judgment.
21:09 [laughter]
21:10 Your kidney-powered 55.
21:12 Hey, good-looking beard, huh?
21:13 Oh, look, wait.
21:14 Don't get it intertwined.
21:15 Spontaneous combustion if they touch, dude.
21:16 You gotta go.
21:17 We're gonna Velcro together.
21:18 Hey!
21:19 Thanks for watching Roku.
21:20 We'll see you next time.
21:21 We're gonna do some silly stuff.
21:22 You're gonna love it.
21:23 Shenanigans.
21:24 Oh, you said it.
21:25 Hey, hold this.
21:26 Hold this.
21:27 I forgot that one thing to say.
21:28 What's that?
21:29 Is it on?
21:30 Yeah, if you really like car shows and reality shows,
21:34 this is actually the only one in existence.
21:36 [laughter]
21:37 This show is it.
21:38 If you're looking for a reality show and car show,
21:41 there is only one.
21:42 You are gonna get fired.
21:43 And it's roadkill.
21:44 [laughter]
21:45 Oh, Tompkins is awesome.
21:47 [laughter]
21:48 I love it.
21:49 I'm just saying, like, this is real stuff.
21:51 I do this for, like, seven hours,
21:52 and I'll be like, "I'll be at the hotel."
21:55 Rutledge loves us.
21:56 Mother Nature hates us.
21:57 As soon as we hit the road, bam, more rain.
22:01 Oh, perfect.
22:03 All right.
22:07 Guess I'm getting fired for not getting there on time.
22:09 Yeah, well, we didn't want this trip to be too easy, right?
22:13 So we called up Mother Nature
22:14 and asked her to just drop a deuce
22:16 right here in Atlanta for us.
22:19 Now we got drama.
22:21 What are we, five hours from the end of this trip,
22:24 and now it's dangerous?
22:26 Very.
22:28 As much as it blows, I think I'm officially calling it.
22:31 Oh, you have to.
22:32 I know.
22:33 You can't sit here.
22:34 I really wanted to go all the way.
22:36 If you're late for that men's fragrance sampling party
22:38 you're going to tonight, you'll never live it down.
22:41 It's all over. I know it.
22:42 Be safe.
22:43 Yep.
22:44 All right.
22:45 See you later.
22:46 I'm gonna hop in over here with Painless Derek,
22:48 who's been following us in the Cadillac.
22:50 He's the sponsor of the big Party at Power Tour tomorrow.
22:53 He was just doing this with us to hang out and be cool,
22:55 but it's a good thing,
22:56 because now he's going to go save my bacon.
22:58 Oh, good, a traffic jam.
23:07 I've never been so happy to see slow cars in my entire life.
23:11 Woo-hoo!
23:12 Everybody's got to slow down.
23:14 I just got passed by a horse trailer.
23:19 That's all right.
23:21 We're moving.
23:23 It was a big letdown for me not to be able to ride
23:26 all the way to Charlotte, North Carolina with Finnegan in the 55.
23:31 But you know what?
23:32 That moment when he finally made it and rolled in,
23:35 completely road-weary and terrified from the rain,
23:38 and the fans just crowded around the car,
23:41 he and I grabbed a Corona, gave each other a toast,
23:44 and it was like, "Man, we did it."
23:47 [cheers and applause]
23:49 We got up this morning, pushed the start button,
23:57 I didn't want to start,
23:58 plugged the laptop in,
23:59 and the tune-up that we parked it with last night is gone.
24:03 We arrived with Alpha N in the box and woke up this morning
24:06 and speed density was in the box.
24:09 I'm at a loss there, so we eliminated the files
24:12 we were tuning with over the last two days
24:14 and went back to the file we had in there when we started this trip,
24:17 which gave us 17 miles to the gallon
24:19 but is not tuned for wide-open throttle.
24:21 Yeah.
24:27 All better, it's good.
24:28 That's part of the problem with this thing,
24:32 is the injector offset.
24:34 It's too wide of a window.
24:36 It needs voltage.
24:37 Yeah, see, it's going down.
24:40 How did it work last night?
24:42 Let's just get to the event.
24:44 This isn't going to run very far.
24:46 We knew things had been going too easy on this trip,
24:53 so of course the roadkill curse bit us
24:56 at the least opportune moment.
24:58 2,500 miles and here we are.
25:01 Ready?
25:02 Way too low.
25:07 The battery no likey.
25:11 It doesn't have enough voltage to trigger the ECM.
25:14 Just hook it up?
25:16 I don't think so.
25:17 Okay.
25:18 All right, lifesaver.
25:20 That could be helpful, yeah.
25:23 This trip was amazing.
25:31 First, we built a ludicrous car,
25:33 a Hemi and a '55 Chevy Gasser.
25:35 And then, after just driving it around the block once,
25:39 we hit the road for 2,600 miles
25:41 and in the big picture, really didn't have that many problems.
25:44 And we survived on rain, on slicks,
25:47 and we hung out with a bunch of really cool people.
25:50 But the capper was the fans that we met along the way.
25:53 We had been letting them follow us on a live GPS map online,
25:57 and everywhere we went, they came out to see us
25:59 at gas stations and waving at the side of the road.
26:02 And it was just awesome to meet people
26:04 and hear their gearhead stories.
26:06 And it really came to a head at this Party at Power Tour,
26:09 where we were just thronged with a bunch of people
26:12 who watch Roadkill.
26:13 And meeting the little kids who were inspired by it,
26:15 the whole thing was truly humbling.
26:19 We know that there's a lot of views on YouTube,
26:21 but to just be able to talk to people
26:23 and find out how the show affects their lives,
26:26 man, it makes it all worthwhile.
26:28 And in all, made this the best Roadkill trip ever.
26:33 [ENGINE REVVING]
26:36 Yeehaw!
26:41 Yeah!
26:49 So you built the motor, and it's your car.
26:52 It's my car.
26:53 And that's your buddy, and you guys
26:55 are driving it across the country.
26:57 Yep.
26:58 That's badass.
26:59 But you built the motor.
27:00 Yeah.
27:01 That takes some serious trust in yourself
27:04 to jump behind the wheel after you build it.
27:06 And it had two miles on it when we left town.
27:08 Also, it was broke in.
27:09 Yep.
27:10 Just about.
27:11 No oil in it.
27:12 But it was broke in.
27:13 I had plenty of break-in mileage, but no oil.
27:15 Apparently, I can build them and just not fill them with fluids.
27:18 I want to do that.
27:19 Two miles is eight quarter mile passes.
27:21 That's right.
27:22 Right?
27:23 So--
27:24 That's a weekend for you.
27:25 That's pretty broke in.
27:26 Yeah.
