Drunk recruits, insubordinate soldiers and convicts are among hundreds of Russian soldiers sent to the most dangerous parts of the frontline in so-called Storm Z squads, according to 13 people with knowledge of the matter, including five fighters.
Echoing "punishment battalions" created by Josef Stalin for those soldiers who left their posts during the Second World War, Storm Z soldiers are treated like "just meat" by the Kremlin, one fighter from army unit 40318 said.
He told the Reuters agency that a commander ordered him not to provide medical treatment for wounded Storm Z fighters, while another said all but 15 of the 120 men in his unit were killed or wounded near the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut in June.
