"The Handmaiden" is an erotic psychological thriller directed by Park Chan-wook. This film delves into the lives of a group of individuals from different social classes during Korea's colonial period under Japanese rule.
The story of "The Handmaiden" unfolds against the bleak backdrop of South Korea during its occupation by Japan in the 1930s.
A young pickpocket named Nam Sook-hee (Kim Tae-ri) is hired to become the handmaiden to Hideko (Kim Min-hee), a Japanese heiress. This arrangement is orchestrated by Count Fujiwara (Ha Jung-woo), who is, in reality, a cunning fraudster seeking to gain access to Hideko's wealth. He employs Sook-hee to seduce Hideko into marrying him.
Hideko becomes his target because she has been living under the guardianship of Kouzuki (Choi Jin-woong), her uncle, in a grand but secluded mansion.
As a result, Count Fujiwara plans to marry her, seize her wealth, and confine her to a mental institution. However, this remains a secret between Fujiwara and Sook-hee.
Upon commencing her duties, Sook-hee starts assisting by speaking favorably about Count Fujiwara to Hideko. Every day, she encourages Hideko to marry Count Fujiwara.
