00:00 What all Conservatives want to see are taxes coming down.
00:02 Of course they do.
00:03 That's what I want to see.
00:04 But the best tax cut that we can deliver right now
00:06 is to halve inflation.
00:07 Now, that's something that I'm deeply committed to.
00:10 It's the first of my five priorities.
00:11 Why?
00:12 Because that's how we can help people with the cost of living.
00:14 We just want to put more money in people's pockets.
00:16 And the best way to do that right now
00:18 is through halving inflation.
00:19 And that is a deeply Conservative approach to this.
00:21 And my colleagues understand that.
00:23 This is what Margaret Thatcher did.
00:24 This is what Nigel Lawson did.
00:26 This is in the tradition of great Conservative
00:28 governments bringing inflation down, because that's
00:30 the bedrock on which you build a strong economy.
00:32 And that is the best way to help people
00:34 with the cost of living.
00:34 But it effectively acts like a tax.
00:36 And it's a tax that impacts the poorest the most.
00:39 That's why Margaret Thatcher made it a priority
00:41 to combat inflation.
00:43 And that's what I'm doing.
00:44 Because when we bring inflation down,
00:46 that will then unlock so many good things for the country.
00:49 But crucially, it will ease the burden on the cost of living.
00:52 And that's what I want to do as Prime Minister.
00:54 That's why it's the first of my five priorities.
00:56 And the plan is working.
00:58 Inflation is coming down.
00:59 I said it would.
01:00 We've got to stick to the course
01:01 and we will get the job done.
