HS2 latest : Birmingham to Manchester link at risk

There is speculation that a planned northern section of HS2 is at risk as many believe that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is preparing to announce plans to scrap the link between Birmingham and Manchester. Here's what we know so far about the speculation surrounding the high speed railway.

HS2 is Britain’s new zero carbon, high-speed railway, and is meant to be the UK’s flagship transport levelling up project.

As well as generating jobs through its construction and removing vehicles from our roads, the railway was expected to provide stronger and more efficient links between the North and the South.

However, many now believe that Rishi Sunak is planning to scrap the Birmingham to Manchester Link of the railway due to mounting costs, with the forecasted cost of the railway rising by billions over the past few years.

Politicians across the Conservative and Labour parties have expressed their disappointment at the news.

The Prime Minister has said that he will not comment on the type of speculation currently surrounding the issue, however with the Conservative Party Conference due to start in Manchester very soon, many are expecting to hear a decision on the matter this week.
