Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and Sandro Tonali preview their UEFA Champions League group stage opener with AC Milan after a 3 hour delayed flight. It's Tonali's return to his former club
Transcript
00:00 >> Good evening, everybody. Apologies for our delayed flight. We'll take questions for
00:23 Eddie first and then we'll have Sandra Otunali with you shortly. Okay? Keith.
00:30 >> Hi, Eddie. As Lee said, obviously you guys are delayed by a couple of hours. Can you
00:47 just give us an insight into what's happened there and why you're in this situation?
00:53 >> I believe it's a weather problem. So we were delayed taking off. So sat on the runway
00:58 for quite some time. But nothing we -- it's out of the ordinary really for us. Do a lot
01:05 of traveling in the UK and that can happen from time to time. But we're here and apologies
01:10 for being late.
01:11 >> So you sat at the runway back in Newcastle?
01:13 >> Yeah, for some time, yeah.
01:15 >> So would that affect preparations? I guess it's not ideal for the players to be sat in
01:21 that situation.
01:22 >> Yeah, but it's just part and parcel of the job that we do. It's not out of the norm
01:28 that that can happen. Air traffic control, et cetera. This was a weather problem, but
01:33 we've been in similar situations.
01:34 >> And now you've arrived here to the San Siro, walked in. How are you feeling ahead
01:40 of what is going to be, I guess, just an amazing occasion for everyone involved in the Football
01:45 Club?
01:46 >> Yeah, no, it's been a good day. It's been a long day for us. So an early start and a
01:50 late finish. So it's been a day of preparation really, trying to get all our game plan right,
02:00 trying to make sure we're absolutely organized and as good as we can be for tomorrow's game.
02:05 It's been intense, obviously. As soon as the game finished against Brentford, we immediately
02:08 turned our attentions to this one and we're looking forward to it.
02:11 >> Have you had a chance to go out and have a look at the pitch in this round yet?
02:14 >> No, literally out of the car, well, off the plane, out of the car, straight here.
02:18 >> And just finally for me, is that a concern tonight, the fact that it's going to be a
02:22 late night for the players and yourself?
02:24 >> No, as I say, we're used to it. It's a slightly later arrival time than we would
02:31 have liked for the players. But no big deal for me.
02:36 >> Thanks, Keith. Ian?
02:38 >> Ian Dennis, Five Live. Hi. Is it true you've never attended a Champions League match? And
02:44 I realize that come tomorrow you'll be in the zone and you'll be focused. But when you
02:49 replaced Jimmy Quinn at the age of 31, how special will you feel when you hear that Champions
02:56 League anthem to be managing in this elite competition?
02:58 >> Yeah, no, I've never attended one. I've always been too busy working to take one in.
03:04 But it's not something I've given any thought to. It's a game of football. And yeah, I think
03:11 it would be a proud moment for me. I think it would be a proud moment for everyone connected
03:14 with Newcastle to be back into the Champions League after a long period away. But it is
03:20 a game of football and I think that's just how we have to approach it. Yes, it's a special
03:24 game and we have to be at our best. And there's slight differences in terms of where we've
03:28 travelled. But the game will be the same. But it will be a very difficult one.
03:32 >> Thank you.
03:33 >> Gentleman in the back.
03:35 >> Olof Lund, TV4 Sweden. What do you think Alexander Isak has developed during the time
03:42 under your tutelage? And you have a lot to choose from for tomorrow's game. What does
03:48 Isak give you if you choose him?
03:51 >> I think he's really impressed in his time with us. Initial injury that he picked up
03:59 was a blow for us. But it probably allowed him, looking at a positive, allowed him to
04:03 settle into the country and into our way of playing. And he could watch a lot from the
04:11 sidelines and pick up a lot of what we asked him to do. And then when he came back to fitness,
04:15 he was outstanding for us at the back end of last season. Dovetailed really well with
04:20 Callum. Wilson was versatile, played in various positions for us. And he's just a super technical
04:29 technician. Very, very intelligent footballer. And he's got the ability to win you a game.
04:33 He can do something from the absolutely unexpected. So I think he's a real talent.
04:41 >> Craig in the front.
04:42 >> Hi, Eddie. How long were you on the room with four and what did you and the players
04:49 do?
04:50 >> I'm not sure what was it.
04:54 >> We were probably in the airport for an extra hour and on the plane for 45 minutes
04:57 to an hour as well.
04:58 >> What did we do?
04:59 >> Well, usual stuff that we do. We're watching games and fine tuning our preparation. The
05:05 players are relaxing in various ways with their phones, games together and talking.
05:10 >> And any sort of fitness? Did Callum Wilson train separate days? Is he okay?
05:15 >> Yeah, Callum's okay. Yeah. He very rarely trains two days after a game. So normal preparation
05:22 for him.
05:23 >> Luke in the middle.
05:24 >> Hi, Eddie. Is that on?
05:25 >> Yes.
05:26 >> I can hear you.
05:27 >> Yes.
05:28 >> I'm going to have to turn it off. You can hear my voice anyway. Sandro Tonali coming
05:32 back to AC Milan, what has he brought to your team? What do you make of tomorrow's night's
05:38 occasion for him coming back here?
05:41 >> Yeah, very early days for Sandro with us, but hugely impressive character. He's really
05:48 committed to Newcastle, to living in Newcastle, the language, everything that we would have
05:58 wanted him to do, he's committed 100%. And then on the pitch, I think he's been hugely
06:03 impressive because it is very, very difficult to transfer from country to country and from
06:08 team to team. And again, he's committed to everything we've asked him to do. He picked
06:13 up an injury, of course, on international duty, which was a blow to us, but we don't
06:17 think that's serious. So fingers crossed. He's fit and available for tomorrow.
06:22 >> Gentleman just on the left here.
06:24 >> No, behind.
06:28 >> [FOREIGN]
06:30 >> Hello.
06:32 >> [FOREIGN]
06:34 >> Apologies, sorry. Can you just repeat that for us?
06:46 >> Sorry.
06:48 >> [FOREIGN]
06:58 >> Yeah, I remember going, feels like yesterday, although it was probably a long time ago. I
07:11 was recommended to go and see him work through someone I really trust. And he said this coach
07:17 is very, very good. And at the time, I was regularly visiting countries across Europe
07:23 and teams across Europe to find out more and learn. It's one of the things I love to do
07:29 or did love to do. And I was really, really impressed. I was there for two days. He welcomed
07:33 me. We got on really well. And then, of course, we met in the Premier League when he was at
07:39 Chelsea and I was at Bournemouth and got a lot of respect for him. And I really thank
07:43 him for allowing me to see his work. And it's not necessarily a burning ambition that I
07:50 have to manage in another country, but who knows what the future brings.
07:55 >> Lee at the front.
07:57 >> Eddie, what do you make of the venue? Obviously, you haven't had much time to look around it,
08:02 but it's obviously well-known in football, the San Siro. How much are you looking forward
08:06 to doing your sort of trade out there tomorrow night?
08:09 >> Yeah, really looking forward to experiencing the stadium, the atmosphere, in a sense of
08:15 managing in this environment. But I always think when the game kicks off, it's not in
08:22 the forefront of your thoughts at all, what competition you're in, what ground you're
08:25 in. It's the game and making sure we're competitive and we can execute our plan onto them and
08:32 we can be the best version of ourselves that we can be.
08:35 So it's probably something you think about maybe before briefly and afterwards, but definitely
08:40 not during.
08:41 >> Will the players have a walk around tonight or will the first chance to get the boot be
08:46 tomorrow?
08:47 >> No, again, I think that's probably, in my opinion, overrated. Some would have been
08:52 here before, some wouldn't. It's a pitch. And yes, every player will feel probably slightly
08:59 different, but once they're on it, we hope they perform.
09:02 >> OK.
09:03 >> Aaron at the front.
09:04 >> Eddie, what's the mood like in the dressing room and specifically the likes of Sean Longstaff
09:09 and Dan Bird who have obviously grown up watching the Castle in Europe 20 years ago, how are
09:12 they feeling ahead of the game?
09:14 >> Yeah, I haven't really individually talked to them like that. I think that that's not
09:20 really the type of conversation I would have with them at this stage the day before a game.
09:25 It is very much about trying to get across how I want them to play, what I feel we need
09:30 to do in the game, very much a tactical description really. It's no different to any other day
09:37 before a game in terms of what I've executed across the players. I would very, very, very
09:43 rarely talk to them about what the game means because I think that can only have negative
09:47 connotations if I go too deep with them. So I'm sure they're looking forward to it and
09:51 it will be a big game for everybody.
09:54 >> And the gentleman just next to you.
09:55 >> [FOREIGN]
10:05 >> Yeah, so firstly with Sandro, I think he's a very good player. He's a very good player.
10:12 He's a very good player. He's a very good player. He's a very good player. He's a very
10:19 good player. He's a very good player. He's a very good player. He's a very good player.
10:26 >> [FOREIGN]
10:33 >> Yeah, so firstly with Sandro, I really, really like him as a person. Very, very focused
10:40 on his football, quite serious towards his game, which I like. As I said, one of the
10:46 most impressive things, I think he's a leader, albeit a young player, but with so much growth
10:52 and potential in him. I'm very excited about what he can be for us now and in the future.
10:59 And yeah, I came to the San Siro many years ago scouting and I was hit immediately by
11:05 the size of the stadium and the atmosphere inside. So yeah, it'll be an amazing place
11:10 to be tomorrow.
11:11 >> Right at the back of the room. Yeah.
11:14 >> [FOREIGN]
11:24 >> Yeah, I mean, I think it's going to be a difficult game. AC Milan have real quality.
11:38 A quality coach who's done an incredible job here. As you say, players with Premier League
11:43 experience, I don't think anything new for them. Top quality players, I think they've
11:49 recruited well in the summer as well. So we anticipate a very big challenge in front of
11:55 us.
11:56 >> Oscar.
11:57 >> Just back to the travel delays, what was the thought process behind coming later in
12:02 the day? Could it have been avoided if you'd come earlier?
12:08 >> The thought of coming earlier in the day was so we could do our tactical work. I was
12:14 going to say, yeah, behind closed doors, really. For me, that's so important that we get our
12:22 work done and we're able to work because with such small game time, time between games,
12:27 that was really valuable that we did that. As I said, it's no big issue for me.
12:34 >> Martin, next to you.
12:36 >> Sorry, I was going to ask the same question about why you decided not to train at the
12:40 San Siro and whether that had impacted the flight schedule this afternoon.
12:43 >> I don't think it impacted the flight schedule, the way they did that. But we wanted to train
12:50 and prepare for the game. Whereas if you train here, then that goes out the window, really.
12:56 >> Simon.
12:57 >> Just a basic question about what you hope to achieve in the Champions League this year
13:01 and how far you can go. Do you want to go all the way, that kind of thing?
13:05 >> Maybe not all the way.
13:06 >> No, we want to do as well as we can. There's no secret, there's no surprise in my answer.
13:13 We want to be very competitive, first and foremost. We want to give a really good account
13:18 of ourselves. We want to show our style of play and try and impose that into the competition.
13:26 And, of course, then with that, you hope you get the results that follows. But I think
13:31 first and foremost, the competitive nature of our game has to be there, which was against
13:37 Brentford at the weekend. It was a really good return back to the basics of the game
13:41 and we did them very well and we need to do that again in this game.
13:45 >> Gentleman on the right.
13:46 >> [Foreign language]
13:59 >> Well, I was fortunate enough to meet him a few years ago and we had a really good conversation
14:04 on football. Someone I respect a lot. I mean, you look at the teams that he's managed,
14:09 it's an incredible list, really. Still for someone relatively young in the coaching world
14:15 and he's obviously won his league very recently. Good guy, really good energy about him.
14:23 And, yeah, I think this is a very prestigious club, a great club to manage and he's done
14:29 incredibly well. So, full credit to him.
14:31 >> Okay, in the middle.
14:33 >> [Foreign language]
14:54 >> No, I very much expect a motivated Milan. I've got no doubt that they will be. Different
15:01 competition, different day. No, you know, we speak from ourselves and our perspective,
15:10 we had a couple of difficult results and then you're always looking for the ability to bounce
15:17 back and show your true qualities and I'm sure Milan will be the same after the game
15:22 at the weekend. But we can only focus on ourselves and I think coming here we have to start the
15:28 game well. That's imperative, especially with the atmosphere we're going to face and the
15:32 conditions. So, I think the start to the game is going to be key.
15:36 >> And last one, Dominic.
15:38 >> Will any players from your B-list squad be involved tomorrow night, either Elliot
15:43 Anderson, Lewis Miley, players like that?
15:46 >> Yeah, I think without having the list right in front of me, I think that those players
15:50 you mentioned will be involved. Paul Dumit as well, I don't know if he's on the B-list.
15:55 But, yeah, they'll all be involved.
15:57 >> Lewis Miley, 17 years old, could become the club's youngest ever player in Europe.
16:01 Just what does this experience give him?
16:05 >> Yeah, I think the experience, regardless of whether he gets onto the pitch or not,
16:08 is really, really valuable if that's how you approach the experience. I think just to take
16:13 it all in, see it all, will really, really help him, I hope, throughout his career. If
16:19 he can have fond memories and draw from the experiences that he's going to come into contact
16:24 with in the next couple of days.
16:26 >> OK, thank you for waiting for us and apologies again. Thank you.
16:29 >> Thank you very much.
16:30 >> Cheers.
16:32 >> Cheers.
16:34 >> Cheers.
16:36 >> Cheers.
16:38 >> Cheers.
16:40 >> Cheers.
16:42 >> Cheers.
