00:00 (chimes tinkling)
00:03 - All right.
00:05 From Baltimore to Los Angeles and around the world,
00:08 on behalf of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce,
00:10 I now declare today John Waters Day in Hollywood!
00:15 (audience cheering)
00:19 The microphone is all yours.
00:25 - All right, thank you.
00:29 Thank you, thank you.
00:31 God.
00:32 (audience cheering)
00:36 Here I am, closer to the gutter than ever.
00:40 The Hollywood Walk of Fame,
00:44 the first place I ever came to in Los Angeles
00:48 after driving across the country with David Lockery.
00:51 I got out of my vehicle in 1970 at Hollywood & Vine
00:55 and darted across the street and got a jaywalking ticket.
01:00 (audience laughing)
01:01 The first one, and I never looked back.
01:04 This store is at the perfect,
01:07 this star is at the perfect location.
01:09 Larry Edmonds Bookshop,
01:10 I've been coming here for half a century.
01:14 And it's still my favorite spot on Hollywood Boulevard.
01:18 I'd like to dedicate this wonderful honor to,
01:22 you have the picture, we're gonna put it down,
01:24 to my parents, which is, we're gonna, we have it?
01:28 Yeah, and we're gonna put that on the star
01:30 when I do the pictures?
01:31 Yeah, yeah, show it, please.
01:32 Yeah, yeah.
01:33 (audience cheering)
01:36 To my parents, Pat and John Waters,
01:38 who despite being horrified by my early films
01:43 and some of the late ones too,
01:46 encouraged me to continue because I guess they just thought,
01:48 what else could I possibly do except be in show business?
01:53 Many of my family is here today,
01:56 and I imagine they are as astonished as I am
01:59 about this tribute in a way.
02:01 My oldest friends too, many of whom have worked with me,
02:05 but also were with me in my private life,
02:08 in the good times and the bad, not just show business.
02:12 Bob Shea at New Line, oh, Sarah Risher too,
02:15 thank you for green lighting me all these times.
02:18 Warner Brothers too, for distributing my films now.
02:21 And the other studios that green lit me.
02:24 Same to Tom Hanson, my originable showbiz attorney,
02:27 who taught me the ropes.
02:29 And now Jason Hendler also has taken over that duty.
02:33 I salute Outfest too, for sponsoring this event.
02:37 And thinking I was gay enough to receive it.
02:42 I get down on my knees for you, yes.
02:50 And next year, maybe divine.
02:54 All right?
02:55 The Hollywood Walk of Fame, you're the best.
03:02 And I hope the most desperate showbiz rejects
03:06 walk over me here, and feel some sort of respect
03:11 and strength.
03:12 The drains on this magic boulevard
03:15 will never wash away the gutter of my gratitude.
03:19 The flotsam of my film career,
03:22 or the waste of water's appreciation.
03:26 Thank you, Academy, for this major show
03:28 you've been giving me.
03:29 Thank you, Hollywood.
03:30 This time, I've finally gone beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
03:35 Thank you.
03:36 (audience cheering)
03:39 - So, as you may know, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce
03:48 administers the Walk of Fame on behalf
03:51 of the city of Los Angeles.
03:53 This is a real place in the city that we call Hollywood,
03:57 and it's represented by L.A. City Councilmember
04:00 Hugo Sotomartinez.
04:03 And on his behalf, we present you, John Waters,
04:06 with a resolution on behalf of the city of L.A.
