Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie updates were relatively slow until 2023 when production, and promotion of the new Sonic movie, started to gain momentum. The latest Sonic 3 news comes from franchise writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller who confirmed movement on the new Sonic the Hedgehog sequel while sparing any specific details about what kind of story they are developing. Despite no real confirmations, the writing duo let fans know that the movie was "looking good" and that they should start getting excited about it. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 certainly expanded the universe of the movie and went for a bigger adventure, so it seems like the third entry in the franchise will continue this trend of the movies upping the scale and scope with each film.
Confirmation of a Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on the way came months before the second movie opened. The sequel announcement was not all as there was also the news that there would be a Knuckles spinoff television show. Clearly, the studio had a lot of faith in the second movie performing well which proved to be the case making the early announcement of a third movie a smart move. Given the quick turnaround between the first two movies, it also makes sense that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is moving along even with the second movie still fresh in the minds of fans. The end credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was also a big clue, since it teased the introduction of one of Sonic's most popular pallette-swapped rivals — Shadow.
