More than 100 firefighters were today battling a huge blaze which broke out at a waste centre.

Dramatic footage shows a huge pall of smoke rising above the fire at the Herne Hill waste transfer station in south London.

Local resident Joao Salerno, 60, captured the footage from his balcony overlooking the scene.

London Fire Brigade were called just after 2am this morning (8) with crews from Brixton, Clapham, West Norwood and Peckham working to extinguish the flames.

Fire chiefs confirmed via Twitter that approximately 100 firefighters were at the scene.

Joao, from Herne Hill, said: “It looked huge – the building collapsed and the wall is totally destroyed.

“Many people are still working on the fire now but there is still lots of smoke.

“The wind is very low so we are lucky – the smoke is going up instead of into our homes.
