The Electric Hot Hatch of the Future, Exterior Design, New Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept

Are you ready for the perfect hot hatchback to go electric? Volkswagen is preparing for the segment with its retro-themed ID. At IAA Mobility 2023, the GTI Concept aims to bridge the 48-year history of the combustion engine-powered GTI with VW's electric future.

If the red car seen here looks familiar, you're probably thinking of VW ID. Launched earlier this year, 2all Concept. The similarity is not a coincidence; Volkswagen designers originally thought of the GTI when designing this concept, so you'll find pretty much the same features here, albeit trimmed with black and red. It has sportier trims front and rear, and it runs on Mk1 GTI-inspired wheels. The taillights are darker and the wing on the tailgate matches the black coating around the glass. The grille is also darkened with red trim, and you'll naturally find the GTI branding everywhere.

At this point we would like to tell you about the motivation under the skin of this racy red hatchback. For now, VW has nothing to say other than it's a single-engine, high-performance drivetrain with electronic differential lock for the front wheels. It also offers a wide range of customization via the GTI Experience Control, which can adjust everything from suspension to steering feel and sound, and even create simulated shift points to mimic GTIs from decades ago.

Speaking of decades, you'll find more retro beauty in the interior, not just the plaid armchairs. Identity. The 2all's dual-screen digital interior continues, but VW offers multiple settings on the ID. GTI Concept with classic instrument displays. Want to cruise in a Mk2 GTI? You can adjust this and if you find yourself on the Nurburgring for example, an increased warning screen will reflect the layout of the track in the lower corner of the windshield. Meanwhile, the passenger can follow the lap times reflected on the windshield.

It's unknown if this technology has made its way into production, but VW says the interior layout, which includes a 12.9-inch center display, 10.9-inch driver display, and various physical controls, is close to production. The automaker also clearly states the identity. The GTI Concept is "a first look at the exciting GTI future because it was decided to go into production." Although this concept focuses on performance, VW reminds us that it's still a practical hatchback that can carry five people and 17.3 cubic feet of luggage in the trunk.

When will this concept become reality? This is also something VW isn't ready to talk about yet. But you can enjoy the future at IAA Mobility 2023, where the ID is featured. The GTI Concept will be on display from September 5th.
