Job Security Concerns Drive Seibu Workers to Strike in Japan
  • 8 months ago
Workers at Seibu, a major Tokyo department store, have gone on strike after negotiations with management regarding the sale of their company broke down. They are seeking assurances for job security and continuity of business. The sale of Sogo & Seibu to Fortress Investment Group has caused dissatisfaction among the workers, as they are unhappy with reported plans for Yodobashi Holdings to take over part of the store. This strike is the first major walk-out in Japan in over 60 years. The owner of Seibu & Sogo, the parent company of the department store, has been in financial trouble for the past four years.
