Ex-Cardinal Escapes Trial, Sexual Assault Charges Dismissed
  • 8 months ago
Former US Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who was defrocked by Pope Francis in 2019 for sexual crimes against minors and adults, has been found not competent to stand trial for sexual assault charges in Massachusetts. A judge dismissed three counts of indecent assault and battery against McCarrick, now 93 years old, after a psychologist retained by prosecutors testified that he has dementia likely due to Alzheimer's disease and cannot participate in his defense meaningfully. McCarrick is the only current or former US Catholic cardinal to face child sex abuse charges.
