2024 BMW i5 Introduced with 295 Mile Range, $67,795 Base Price
The first battery-powered BMW 5 Series shares the CLAR platform with the range of internal combustion engines.

The i5 looks clearly like a 5 Series, adopting the classic three-box design with a long hood and Hofmeister kink and showcasing a modern interpretation of the brand's signature twin headlights and kidney grilles (with optional lighting). Flat LED taillights and sporty bumpers are also worth mentioning. BMW clearly played it safe in the styling department when compared to the i7 sedan or XM SUV.

Inside, the BMW i5 features a dashboard layout reminiscent of the iX SUV, with the driver-focused, all-digital BMW Curved Display at the centre. The setup consists of a 12.3-inch Information Display behind the steering wheel and a 14.9-inch Control Display combined into a single unit.

The BMW Curved Display is powered by BMW Operating System 8.5, the latest generation of iDrive with a clear start screen and new graphic display with QuickSelect access for simple and intuitive touch operation. Besides using the steering wheel buttons and the BMW iDrive Controller in the center console, drivers can operate the control system primarily via the touchscreen and natural language.

Interestingly, the BMW i5 is also launching the in-car gaming experience in collaboration with the gaming platform AirConsole. While stationary, the driver and passengers can play casual games such as racing, sports, quiz, simulation, strategy, jump-run and puzzle, using their smartphone as a controller and the BMW Curved Display.

The i5 M60 xDrive features a twin-motor drivetrain that delivers 590 hp (440 kW) and 549 lb-ft (743 Nm) of torque or 605 lb-ft (819 Nm) with M Sport Boost or M Launch Control functions. Promising "distinctive M Performance features", the i5 M60 xDrive accelerates from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 230 km/h when equipped with performance tires.

Both variants are powered by a high-voltage battery with 84.3 kilowatt-hours of use, consisting of 4 modules with 72 battery cells each and 3 modules with 12 cells each.

The battery provides a driving range of 295 miles for the i5 eDrive40 or 256 miles for the i5 M60 xDrive on standard 19-inch wheels. Range ratings are estimated by BMW based on EPA's test procedure standards.

The BMW i5 will be manufactured at BMW's Dingolfing Plant, Europe's largest plant, where electric motors and high-voltage batteries are also produced. US prices start at $67,795 for the i5 eDrive40 and $85,095 for the i5 M60 xDrive ($995 including shipping).
