Un candidat à l'élection présidentielle en Équateur, Fernando Villavicencio, a été assassiné par balle à la fin d'un meeting électoral mercredi 9 août au soir à Quito, a annoncé le président équatorien Guillermo Lasso. Fernando Villavicencio, un centriste de 59 ans, était l'un des huit candidats au premier tour de la présidentielle prévu le 20 août.
