'Eris' Variant: WHO sounds alarm over the new strain of Covid-19 variant spreading rapidly across UK
  • 9 months ago
The WHO has sounded alarm against a new variant of Covid that is spreading rapidly. The alert has been sounded after the health authorities in the United Kingdom are said to be on their toes after a new variant of the Covid-19 virus was reported to be proliferating at a fast pace. This sub-variant has been named Eris. In technical terms, it is being referred as EG.5.1 and is spreading quickly in the UK. Although the cases were spiking in the UK, but the variant Eris was recognized only on 31 July after the infections from the virus skyrocketed. EG.5.1 was first raised as a signal in monitoring on 3 July 2023 as part of horizon scanning due to increasing reports internationally, particularly in Asia. It was subsequently raised from a signal in monitoring to a variant on 31 July 2023 due to the increasing number of genomes in UK data, and continued growth internationally. Right now, it is just a variant of interest. More data will reveal whether it would be declared a variant of concern.
