You might have heard south Africa being referred to as Proteas in international cricket by commentators and presenters. It’s a nickname given to the South African national team. This name proteas is derived from South Africa’s national flower Protea Cynaroides commonly known as King Protea in South Africa. If you have seen South Africa’s coat of arms, the flower in the middle is Protea Cynaroides.
