‘Parade of mayors’ marks Yorkshire Day in Rotherham

Dozens of mayors paraded through the streets of Rotherham on Tuesday, 1 August, to celebrate Yorkshire Day.

The event has been marked with celebrations actross the county, including the reading of the Yorkshire Declaration of Integrity in York in all the languages used in Yorkshire since its earliest known reference in Anglo-Saxon times which include Old English, Latin, Old Norse and modern English.

Yorkshire Day was first celebrated in 1975 by the Yorkshire Ridings Society.

The date it is celebrated, 1 August, alludes to the Battle of Minden in Germany in 1759, which saw the Army allow soldiers to wear roses in their caps.
