Cargo Ship with 3,000 Vehicles Ablaze, Crew Forced to Jump Overboard
  • 9 months ago
The cargo ship Panama-registered Fremantle Highway caught fire off the Dutch coast while carrying nearly 3,000 vehicles from Germany to Egypt. The fire started Tuesday night, forcing several crew members to jump overboard. One crew member died, and others suffered injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown, but it was reported to have possibly begun near an electric car on board. The fire was challenging to control and might last for several days. Rescue ships sprayed water on the vessel to cool it down, but the excessive water use risked the ship sinking. The ship was attached to a salvage vessel to prevent drifting. Around 25 of the vehicles on board were electric cars. Given the increasing number of fires on cargo ships carrying electric vehicles, the International Maritime Organisation plans to evaluate new safety measures for such shipments next year.
