Biden Administration’s New Rules , for Asylum-Seekers at Border Blocked by Judge.
In May, rules took effect which made it more difficult for migrants to gain asylum if they came into the U.S. after going through Mexico or elsewhere without trying to get protection there first, NPR reports. .
U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar has blocked those rules after finding them unlawful since they impose conditions on migrants that Congress didn't plan.
Noncitizens who enter between
ports of entry, using a manner of entry that Congress expressly intended should not affect access to asylum, U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar, via ruling.
Tigar's ruling will be stayed for 14 days, which gives the Biden administration time to appeal.
NPR reports that illegal border crossings dropped significantly in May and June.
The Biden administration attributes
the decrease to the new asylum rules
as well as the mobile app CBP One.
The app allows migrants "to schedule interviews
at official ports of entry," NPR reports. .
The interview process is the
first step in filing for asylum.
GOP-led states have continually
challenged current border policies.
They contend that too many migrants are being allowed into the U.S. to pursue asylum.
