EU Passes Law to Put Fast EV Chargers , on Highways by End of 2025.
The Council of the EU is attempting to make it easier for electric vehicle (EV) owners to get around Europe, while also helping to fight climate change, The Verge reports.
The new regulation will help to expand
Europe's EV charging infrastructure,
simplify payments "at the pump" and
clearly convey pricing as well as availability.
Beginning in 2025, fast charging stations that offer a minimum of 150kW of power will be installed every 37 miles throughout the Trans-European Transport Network.
By the end of 2025, the regulation mandates that
the road network must be able to provide at least 400kW of total output at charging stations.
By the end of 2027, total output is
expected to reach at least 600kW.
A minimum of one charging point capable of 150kW of output will be required at each station.
By 2035, at least two charging points that can output 150kW will be available at stations.
Payments will be accepted "via cards or contactless devices," The Verge reports.
This will allow any brand of EV to charge
at any kind of station without needing to download an app or have a subscription.
The new regulation is part of the EU's "Fit for 55" initiatives intended to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 55% prior to 2030 and attain climate neutrality by 2050.
